This easy "Burlap Monogram Art"(here) was a hit-- and with a little paint and hot glue, you can make one too!

Beautiful Laundry Room Tile

My husband has really been itching to tile something. So the other day, he smashed up our laundry room floor. Literally-- cracking tile with a sledge hammer. Removing all the tile. Then sanding down the cement to make it smooth.
The tile he removed was a bit dated, it was from the original owners who built the house in 1997. And since he has wanted to try his hand at tile work, the laundry room seems a great place 'to learn'. And nothing makes my guy happier than a little home renovation.

After he was done, he looked to me to pick out the tile. And for some reason, I have been a bit indecisive. There are so many beautiful ideas for tile...

And if I were to get really crazy-- wouldn't Stripes be lovely?! (These aren't all in a laundry room, but I can imagine it might be easier to do laundry on a fun floor!)

I am missing the source on this one- sorry!

I need help! I might just let my hubby pick it out. What tile do you like best?

A Mate for Chesterfield

I spent some time this week looking for a mate for "Chesterfield". He has been a wonderful addition to our family (more on the new couch here). But as you can imagine, going from a really large sectional to just one couch-- has drastically reduced our 'seating'. When we bought Chesterfield, we knew we needed another piece. We just weren't sure what that would be. I moved my striped wingback over to the right side of the couch. But we still need one more piece to put on the left. So this week, I went on the hunt. And let me tell you, Chesterfield is a hard guy to please. He's kind of picky about the company he keeps!

On one hand, I could have purchased another Chesterfield and faced them towards each other like this. But you know, furniture is something that both parties must agree on. And my husband vetoed the idea of two sofas facing each other. Unlike those gorgeous "House Beautiful" pictures on Pinterest ;) he wants the seating to face the television.

So my other option would be to do an "L-shape". But I don't really like the look of a Chesterfield and another Chesterfield together in an 'L-shape'. Too much fancy arms and tufting in one corner space for my liking.

Then I looked for a mismatched but coordinating sofa to put next to my guy. I was thinking maybe something more modern looking with straight lines. Since Chesterfield is so curvy. I like the look of a good grey linen or tweed fabric.

But I didn't find really find what I was looking for-- yet. Buying furniture takes a lot visualization and I haven't found anything that looks right in my mind's eye. Searching Houzz and Pinterest probably doesn't help. Most of those aren't 'real family' rooms where kids want to snuggle and watch Doc McStuffins in the mornings. And I want my family room to still feel comfy and 'real' while being pretty at the same time.

Over the weekend, we are going to head back to The Dump. I am thinking that maybe a large leather 'chair and half' with an ottoman might be just the perfect "snuggly yet pretty" piece of furniture we are looking for. A few weeks back, they had several from Restoration Hardware for almost half the original price. Fingers crossed that Chesterfield likes who I bring home to live with him!

I hope you have a great weekend :) Tomorrow is my little one's first soccer game ever (my husband is the coach!!) and World Thinking Day for my other daughter's Brownie Troop (they are representing Austria). The weather is supposed to be fabulous all weekend long. What more could we ask for?! :)

The Thing About Hanging Curtains...

The thing about hanging curtains is you have to hang them high and wide. That's it! So easy, so simple ----right?!

If you aren't convinced yet, let me show you. Curtains or drapes are the BEST way to make a window look larger. They add texture to a room. And are the perfect way to bring in some contrast. Drapes give your room a finished look.

But if you hang them tightly around the window, you are shrinking one of your room's best assets. (the window!) Take a look at the drapes in my house. When I first moved in, I wasn't sure what to do with them. The previous owner had them hung the 'wrong' way-- just right above the window. But then I saw this graphic on Pinterest (here) and I had a light bulb moment.

Source
In my dining room, we hoisted that curtain rod up! Don't worry about making a new set of holes in your wall. Just patch, paint and move on. Hanging the curtains HIGH and WIDE will make your room feel taller and more dramatic. Yes you may need to order new curtains. Once you move those drapes up high, you will need reevaluate length. But trust me, it is so worth it!

In my family, the printed curtain panels from West Elm (they are no longer available, but these are similar here) really define the room. It is a bold print and yet a neutral at the same time. This wall is actually 4 separate windows and with 4 smaller windows on top. But by hanging the panels in between the windows, it creates the illusion of one large window. Which makes the room feel bigger.

Finally in my breakfast nook, I have this bay window. At first I wasn't quite sure what to do with it. It is one large window in the middle, flanked by two skinny windows on the side. So I ended up ordering a custom rod that would fit the wall perfectly. (Here is a rod similar to the one I bought.) Getting the right size rod is worth the small investment. Once again, we hung these drapes high and wide.

And these drapes are actually burlap panels that I made myself. The burlap is from JoAnns. The fabric comes finished on the sides. So all you have to do is sew one straight line to hem the bottom and one straight line to create a rod pocket at the top. Sewing burlap is messy, but I love the 'linen' feel of these homemade panels. And the price was even nicer! I placed these panels between the windows and off the the sides to create that illusion of one large window.

What are your experiences with hanging curtains? Do you have a window that would benefit from hanging your drapes high and wide?
