Craft It: "Be Good for Goodness Sake" Christmas Sign

Happy Thanksgiving! Are you planning to get up early to go shopping tomorrow? Me neither!:) After a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with family, food and fun- I will be happy to stay home. I want to finish decorating the house for Christmas tomorrow.  I started a little bit yesterday. I don't have everything out of the boxes yet, but I thought I would give you a sneak peek on what I am working on:) Last year, my holiday mantle was bright red, white, silver and gold. Since I am still in love with bold contrast and mixed metallics, I am bringing that look back. But I will be adding a few new accessories.

Like this "Be Good For Goodness Sake" sign. I created it on my Silhouette Cameo using the Adhesive Card Stock. First, I painted a piece of scrap wood with red spray paint. I measured the wood and decided how to large to make the letters in order to get them all to fit. With all of the letters in this saying, I had to be precise! (The Silhouette helped with the 'being precise' part.)

Then I opened my Silhouette software, chose my favorite font, and simply 'filled the page' with the letters needed. Then my machine did the rest-- cutting the letters out perfectly. All I had to do was peel away the paper backing and add the letters to the wood. I used a chalk line to keep the letters straight. After I had everything in place exactly as I wanted, I painted over all the letters and wood with a matte decoupage from Martha Stewart. Finally, I sanded the edges of the sign to add a little bit of character.

If you don't have a Silhouette, you could buy letters from your craft store and glue them on. But honestly, it is so much easier to choose whatever font you want and then easily adjust the size for your project.

In honor of Black Friday, Silhouette is offering an amazing deal to you starting today--their BIGGEST deal ever. Which means that this is the perfect opportunity for you to get your own Silhouette! Call it an 'early Christmas gift'. Or simply forward this post to your hubby :) hint, hint. And if history repeats itself, they will sell out. So take advantage now!

Craft It: Chevron Advent Calendar {A Free Printable}

You know that I have been holding off on Christmas for as long as possible. But since Thanksgiving is tomorrow,  it is time to start the Christmas season. Christmas is the 'most wonderful time of the year' and I can't wait any longer for it to begin. So with that said, here is my first creation for the holiday season. A super cute- and easy- printable advent calendar. And of course, it's chevron :)

I love counting down to Christmas with my girls. The anticipation for Christmas Day to arrive is part of the magic of the holiday. But there is SO much celebrating and gifting. SO much--that sometimes it just feels like TOO much. Don't get me wrong, I love lots of decorating, baking and crafting during the holidays. But the nightly Elf antics and crazy attempts to provide amazing small gifts and/or holiday experiences for the 24 days before Christmas ever arrives can get any sane person feeling a little crazy.

So this year I am ready to keep things a little more manageable. Focus more on family and the spirit of the holiday and less on "elves" and "advent gifts". Instead of making each day crazy-over-the-top 'Pinterest-special'. I am going to try and save most of that 'energy' for the big day. For starters, I am keeping our advent calendar "stress-free".

This cute advent calendar is perfect for counting down the days til Christmas. To make one for your family, simply drag the one of the documents below to your desktop and print. Or click on the link and download it for free.

Then put the document in your favorite 8x10 frame. Each day, color an 'ornament' with a dry erase marker. I personally like to use blue. (If you made the "I Am Thankful" frame with me last month, you can just pop that one out and replace it with this one!)

As Christmas gets closer, the tree becomes 'more decorated'. And there is no stress for you! No little gifts or trinkets to buy, no 'Christmas bucket list' that you have to race to complete.

Just color a ball on the Chevron Advent Calendar and enjoy your family. Because that is really all anyone wants for the holiday season anyway :)

I originally shared this project over at Tatertots and Jello as part of Jen's Happy Holidays series. Pop on over to TT&J to see the other projects featured in the series.

Craft It: Salt Dough Turkeys

We are home all week- no school due to Thanksgiving. And thankfully, our family all lives nearby, so we don't have to travel! To keep my girls (and myself) happy, we crafted today.

Using our 'tried and true' salt dough recipe, the girls made turkeys! Afton is old enough to make the dough her self, I just supervised. Then she brought down all of our goodies from CraftProjectIdeas.com. Beads, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, and glitter.

This project is easy enough to do, your little ones will love pushing beads into the soft dough. Your big kids will find a way to make it 'their own'. When we started working on these, I had something totally different in mind. Afton thought of this design. Leave it to a 7 year old to 'out craft' her momma :)

The turkeys are now sitting on the table, drying. The girls hope they will be 'dry and ready' by Thanksgiving. We'll have to wait and see. Those are some chunky birds!

What are you doing this Thanksgiving week?

Party Planning: Tacky Christmas Sweater

Each year my family hosts Christmas Eve at our house. And this year, I am going with a theme ;) I want to plan a Tacky Christmas Sweater party! Why??? Because a Tacky Christmas Sweater party is fun! No need to be formal and stress about what to wear, what to serve. Instead embrace all things tinsel, bright and festive-- and enjoy the chance to be a bit tacky!

If you haven't heard of a Tacky Christmas Sweater party, it's a pretty easy theme. Guests simply wear 'ugly holiday sweaters' and awards are given for the guests with the tackiest Christmas outfits. Of course the food and decor can also follow the tacky theme. Here are some of my favorite ideas for hosting a Tacky Christmas Sweater Party.

Step One: Crazy Invitations- Cute invites set the tone and let guests know what they are in for!

Step Two: Gaudy Decorations- Over the top tinsel, lights and wrapping paper make the perfect decor. A photo booth is a great idea for capturing all the guests 'unique' sweaters.

Step Three: Food- Think Chevy Chase and Christmas Vacation. Pigs in a blanket, chips/dips, meatballs, mac n' cheese, pizza, a fun cake, and some gingerbread men dressed in 'ugly' sweaters.

Step Four: Awards - Give out awards for "All Around Ugliest", "Most Festive", "Most Likely To Get Arrested".   You can award buttons, ribbons, or even trophies.

Step Five: What to Wear- Shop a resale shop, look through your grandma's closet, or hit Etsy. You can even craft your own 'ugly' outfit- including accessories!

I was sent this fun t-shirt from Skip N Whistle.   I am wearing it with jeans and a blazer to the girls' school Christmas parties, but for our Tacky party I will probably pair it with some sequin suspenders and a big gaudy headband. (Skip N Whistle has a ton of these fun designs- some are even on sweat shirts, click here to see more Tacky Christmas shirt from Skip N Whistle.)

Have you ever been to a Tacky Christmas Sweater party?
