     If ever there were a time of year I longed to be back in New England it's Fall. I'm not sure if I ever told you but I was raised a Navy brat. The daughter of a sonar officer, we moved every 3 or 4 years until my senior year of high school. People always assumed this was a sad thing, but it wasn't for me. I loved the adventure of starting fresh in a new city. I learned how to make new friends easily and how to road trip like a pro, beagle and pesky little brother in tow. And it created in me a wanderlust spirit that I still have to this day.
      I was able to live in Japan, one of the greatest experiences of my life. I also lived in Charleston and near Seattle. But my favorite place of all was Connecticut. Specifically...Connecticut in the Fall.

             

 
     I am yearning to see my breath in the crisp morning air and shuffle around a snapping fireplace in my dad's Eddie Bauer fur lined slippers, sipping mulled cider fresh from the cider mill. But I live in Houston,TX. And as my daughter likes to say "Yeah...THAT'S gonna happen."

     So I will live vicariously through all of you and your wonderful fall projects, pics and tutorials. If you live in New England, feel free to send me some apple cider and a few of those gorgeous autumn leaves. :) Here are my favorites from last weeks party...

Try It This Weekend: Best Smores Ever

Growing up, I have fond memories of special evenings spent around a campfire. Sometimes it was on a family camping trip, sometimes it was for a Girl Scout event, and then there were times when we gathered together just for fun. I am not the most 'out-doorsy' girl you will ever meet, but if you promise me a campfire with a s'more, I will 'rough it' for a few hours :)

 In our backyard we have a great outdoor fireplace. The previous owners built it and when we moved in, my husband painted it. It makes sitting outside in the evenings nice and cozy, no matter the season or the temperature.

 A few weeks back, we grilled out and decided to do s'mores for dessert. I am a traditionalist when it comes to s'mores. We used big puffed marshmallows, graham crackers and Hershey's chocolate.

 We helped the girls roast their marshmallows using unpainted wire hangers.

 Afton is a girl after my own heart.

 Maisy preferred to eat the marshmallows 'raw'.

 Now that fall is on it's way, s'mores are the perfect dessert. Roast your marshmallows in a backyard fire, a chimenea, or even your fireplace.

 Or if you are in a bind, pop your marshmallows in the microwave. (If you've never microwaved a marshmallow, you haven't lived!) Cooking times vary, but in our house, after about 15 seconds, they puff up nice and big. Don't overcook or they will explode!

DiY Headboards: Make Your Room the Place to Be

Make Your Room the Place to Be

 When it comes to the bedroom, I am very particular. Most of the time, I just make my way to the nearest Restoration Hardware or Home Depot or someplace where I know I’ll be able to find something that resembles what I’m looking for.

Lately, though, I’ve been looking for something a bit more unique, and let’s be honest – those places just don’t fit the creative bill.

This is especially true when it comes to your bed’s headboards. I know, you’re thinking, “Headboards are all the same; they come with the bed.” In many cases, yes, this is true, but what if you could turn your bed into an attraction your friends will want to see, and something that you can be proud of in the future? Here are a few ideas for the perfect DiY headboard.

Do a Little Painting

The traditional idea of a headboard is that it must be physically attached to the bed. Well, think again. These two headboards are not only not attached to the bed, they don’t even take physical form.

Never heard of chalkboard paint? This headboard took form when the owner painted the wall directly behind their bed with the chalkboard paint, then used a little chalk to draw a headboard at the head of their bed. If you’re not the overly artistic type, here’s another idea that involves paint and is a lot less artistic, but still unique and beautiful.

All this takes is the ability to paint a rectangle, and there are plenty of tools that can aid you in that task.

Changing the feel of your bedroom has never been so easy as it is with a little paint.

It's Samantha from Crafty Texas Girls hosting this week.  

Around my house we are excited FALL! The weather has gotten a bit cooler (good riddance to those 100+ temps), my girls have started cheering for our youth football team, TCU games are here, and I am brainstorming ideas for my fall decor. After looking back at a few of my projects from last year, I am pretty sure that burlap will be making a comeback in my home!

And after looking at your posts from last week, I can see you are excited for September too! Everyone gets so creative this time of year. So this week, I have chosen 10 of your best ideas- a bit of fall inspiration, some beautiful home decor, and a yummy recipe too.  I hope that they will inspire you to welcome fall, update your home decor and try a new crafty project this month.

 
1. Get a head start on your fall decor with a bit of gold. Start with this Gilded Pumpkin tutorial shared by "From Generation to Generation" .

2. Is your laundry room/keeping space lacking some pizzazz? Check out this make-over from "Lookie What I Did" and find some inspiration for getting organized. 

 

3. Experiment with a bold color. I love the warm orange wall color and black accents chosen by "Ranger 911" for her French Country Kitchen.

4. Create a new look on your shelves or mantle by shopping your home.  "Forever Decorating" showed off her newest 'hutch' decor and how to mix old and new. 

 5. "Must Love Junk" adds a pop of orange with these sweet little pumpkins. 

 6. Get the look for less with these gorgeous painted curtains. The perfect way to change the feel of a room.  Shared by "The Concrete Cottage". 

 

7. Have you been thrifting lately? "Daisy Mae Belle" knows how and her room reveal will inspire you to look twice the next time you are at a garage sale or Goodwill. 

8.  "Gwen Moss" wrote an interesting post about what fun Halloween decor you can find at the Dollar Store now. Stock up early, you won't believe what you can find for $1.

 

9. Invite over a few friends and enjoy this yummy cake with a Pumpkin Spiced Latte. The perfect fall treat.  Shared by "100% Molly Made". 

10. And finally, "Craftberry Bush" has given me wreath envy! I love the look of hydrangeas and burlap. Challenge yourself to craft a beautiful fall wreath this month.
