The Blue Chair

I think it was meant to be. Remember when I told you about 'the blue chair'? The one from Goodwill that was sooo amazing...

Photo via Apartment Therapy
Well I went back to Goodwill a few days later, looking for some 'vintage' tablecloths and guess who was still there?! The blue chair. I felt like he was waiting for me.

So for $30 I left Goodwill with yet another "furniture rescue" and drove home with a smile on my face.  I told my husband not to look until I had a chance to freshen him (this chair is a definitely a  "him" don't you think?!) up a bit. He needed to be dusted off and vacuumed. I decided to paint his wooden legs brown too. And then there was the issue of the wax. I wish had taken a photo of this part, but I was trying to work fast :)

There were wax drippings across the arm of the chair. So after a quick google search, I found you can easily remove wax from velvet. I set my iron on warm, and put a folded piece of paper towel between the iron and the chair. The heat from the iron melted the wax and the paper towel absorbed the melted wax. I was amazed, it actually worked! (See the full instructions for removing wax from velvet here.)
Once I had him fixed up, I knew right where he needed to go.

I love the color in our bedroom. The 'blue' looks different shades throughout the day, depending on the amount of light in the room. Then I stumbled upon this rug at TJ Maxx. The green, ivory, black and blue hues are perfect for the room.

I rearranged the accessories on our night tables and found a blue pillow from Target for the striped chair.

This room is a good example that decorating takes a long time! I have been trying to get this project done since January of 2011. In fact it made my resolution list for 2011

Now it is April of 2012 and I am still working! Getting a room just right takes time. It started with the ruffled lamp shades, then I added the drapes from Ikea, we had plantation shutters installed, the 'side of the road' wingback and window cushion were reupholstered, and finally the blue chair and the rug are here. I think our room is 'done'.

The blue chair was definitely meant to come home with me :)
Do you have any projects that 'never seem to end'?

Cowgirl Up #10

 Welcome to Week 10 of
 Cowgirl Up! Link Party . . .
the party with a cowgirl can-do  spirit!
1 Party, 4 Blogs

Anita here, and let me say I am loving all of your wonderful links!!      We have all been so busy lately, I hosted a big ranch party, and we are in closing on my MIL's old house next month, so that basically ends all of my duties with her estate.  Amanda has been up to her eyeballs in tulle (perhaps not literally) with the spring wedding season (she does awesome wedding receptions) and Linsey had a big gallery showing recently with her oil paintings.  I'm not sure what Samantha's been up to, except a fab trip to San Francisco so she is not allowed any sympathy.  Okay, just kidding, I am sure she has had some other things going on her life too.

I do love my blogging buddies!!  Yes I talking about my Cowgirl Up buds, but I'm also talking about all of my dear, dear blogging friends, This week, we cowgirls have been talking about why we blog, and we all agree that we love the creative outlet and the friendships we are making along the way.  I hope you know how much we appreciate you sharing your project here.  We are trying to link up as many of your  projects as we can on our Facebook pages to give you maximum exposure.  Glad you are here.

Here's what caught my eye this week...

Remodelandola shared her gorgeous Easter table.

All Things Beautiful made this lovely Easter Banner.

Confessions of a Plate Addict made this wonderful bunny pillow.

I'm Not a Trophy Wife redid her front porch.  (Is the "N" for "Not"?)

The Farmer's Wife made Easter Egg Cake Balls, Yum!!

Knick of Time showed us her heavy metal finds.

White Lace Cottage shared this amazing chair redo.

And I love this DIY Industrial shelving from Anythingology

Live Laugh Rowe made Vintage inspired favor boxes.

Dancing wih the Band

I hope you all had a fantastic Easter! Our weekend was a full one- we hosted a baby shower, spent lots of time with family, and enjoyed a great Easter celebration. So today, while I am getting my house back in order I thought I would share with you an article I wrote for Southlake Moms a few months ago :)

----------------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever noticed that having small children can turn you into a bit of a hermit? Those adorable little hands and sweet voices can be used for good--- and also for ‘not so good’. A simple errand often leads to screaming and tears.  And that is usually before we even enter the store! So, sometimes it just seems easier to stay home. At home there are walls to contain a wandering toddler. At home, the dress code is a bit more relaxed- shirt, shoes, and pants are optional. And at home, singing, dancing and even yelling are considered ‘normal’ behavior.

But from what I have heard, the only way to learn about the world and how to navigate it—is to actually venture out into it. And with little ‘adult contact’ and my sanity coming into question, it seemed like a good time to go in search of those ‘real life experiences’.

So despite the fact that things could horribly awry and tears could be shed by both child and mom, we recently decided to wander outside the walls of our home. My husband and I loaded up our girls, put on a brave face and hoped for the best.  My sister had invited us to come visit her in Shreveport for the weekend to attend a Mardi Gras parade. Now I must say, my two girls are generally super sweet. At ages 6 and 2, they are good girls. But at the end of the day, they are kids. And as you know, kids will be kids.

The thoughts of a parade with two squirrelly girls made me nervous. There would open spaces, streets with moving cars, and lots of people. Would my children run away? Would they wander off and get snatched up by a stranger? Would they be flattened like pancakes under the floats? Staying home, tucked inside our ‘comfort zone’ seemed so much easier. But faced with the fear of contracting cabin fever and that fact that I missed my sister, I decided the risk was worth the ‘experience’.

Off we went! A three hour drive, lots of movies and snacks—and then we were there. The parade spot was crowded. Lots of people were milling around. Everyone was eating and drinking, passing the time until the official start. The street had not been closed yet, so cars zoomed by just a few feet from where we were sitting. My youngest had missed her nap and I felt we were on the verge of a massive meltdown.  A million worries circled through my head.

But then I took a deep breath and focused. I focused on the other things I saw. My oldest daughter curled up with her aunt, sharing jokes and giggles. My husband smiling, talking, having fun with other adults. And my sweet two year old, well, she had some how fallen asleep in my lap. I felt the sun beat on my face and I closed my eyes to soak it all in. A ‘real life’ experience.

After a few hours of waiting, the parade began. My girls jumped and screamed. Impromptu dancing occurred and even some singing. They were bombarded with beads, cups, and stuffed animals. They had a blast. I honestly couldn’t recall a time when I had seen my entire family wear such big smiles.

Later, on the drive home, I reviewed the details of the day in mind. The parade had been wonderful. Everyone had fun and none of my crazy fears ever materialized. Sure getting out into ‘the big world’ was a bit scary. And there are always ‘lots of things that could happen’. But wasn’t the adventure worth it? How else will my children learn about living if they are not given the chance? Organization and a schedule are great. But there is something to be said for ‘napping on the fly’ and dancing in the streets with a marching band.

Maybe I need to accept the fact that on any given day, there will be some screaming and crying.  My girls are going to ‘fight me’ and run away. But the positive benefits, for ALL of us, of having an adventure, outweigh any negative thoughts that may creep into my mind.

So my suggestion to all of us mothers with small children, don’t let fear and anxiety turn you into a hermit. Our children will misbehave, they will embarrass us, and they will test our limits. But, get out anyway. In my experience, it usually turns out better than you think!

Come back tonight and share your inspiring story, latest diy project, delicious recipe, or whatever you have been blogging about. "Cowgirl Up!" is the original linked linky party, dedicated to celebrating the 'can-do' spirit in all of use. Hope to see ya'll there :)

Spring Painting

Despite a very mild winter in North Texas, when Spring arrives the yard always needs a bit more attention. And lucky for me, my husband is happy to do it! I am amazed at his ability to prune, tend, cut, plant, and grow. He definitely has the green thumb in our family. So over the past few weeks, he has gotten our yard into shape.

Our side yard is the girls' play area. It consists of a good cypress shade tree, thick grass, a turtle sandbox, and the play house.  The area is gated off from the pool, so it is a great place for the girls to play while I fuss around in the kitchen or fold a load of laundry. With a pair of Adirondack chairs, it also makes the perfect place to relax and soak up some sun.

The girls favorite thing about the area is of course the play house. It was a birthday present for Afton when she turned 2. And since then they have imagined it to be everything from a castle, to a restaurant with a drive-thru window, to an 'animal hospital', to a very important office building. Most recently it was a 'camp lodge' :) But the weather had taken a toll on the wood and parts of the house began to rot. The little benches on the porch weren't fit for sitting anymore, the mail box literally fell off, and the door split in two pieces. Faced with the decision to buy a new house or fix up the existing one, we chose the later.

Jeff went through and added new wood and nails where they were needed. And then the girls and I got to pick out new paint. This time we decided to go with a 'cottage in the woods' feel. Which to my girls means pink and purple.

I even found this adorable printed duck cloth at Hobby Lobby- owls in trees- to use for new curtains.

And Afton and Jeff worked to build this new bird house, which was spray painted--pink!

The newly 'refurbished' house stands proudly to welcome in Spring.

What projects have you (or your hubby) been inspired to do now that Spring is here?

Daddy Days

Being 'mom' is not always a glamorous job. There are lots of fun moments. But sometimes when 4pm rolls around, you can feel like you have been in trenches doing battle. Everyone has those days.

So a few months back, when I looked at the school calendar and saw big 'x' marks, I literally groaned. We had just returned to our ‘normal routine’ from break and now it looked like my daughter was up for 3 ‘half days’ followed by a 4 day weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE having both my girls home with me. But after a long break from the school routine, I was ready to get back into the swing of things. Looking at the calendar, I could already tell that wouldn’t be happening. To make matters worse, my husband would be traveling and out of town for 4 days straight.

I looked longingly at my to-do list and headed off for a run to ‘wrap my mind’ around the next few days. What in the world were we going to do? I was positive I had used up all my ‘good ideas’ over break. Now all I could think of was errands I had to do, classes I wanted to take at the gym, and the cleaning that my house needed so badly.

When I got home I jumped in the shower and had an epiphany. I thought of my husband. What did he do when I left him home alone with the girls? Did he worry about grocery shopping, naps, and laundry? No- he had fun. So right then and there, that’s what I made up my mind to do. I washed off the sweat from my workout as well as the ‘guilt and obligations of motherhood’. I emerged from the shower with a new state of mind; over the next few days we would do things a bit differently. We would have ourselves some good old-fashioned “Daddy Days”.

Over the days that followed, we spent our time together eating leisurely meals- some at home and some out. We played and played and played- we did Jump for Fun, the park, built a Barbie world, and made paper dolls from our own photos. We had competitions to see who get the highest score on “Just Dance”, read our favorite books and drew pictures. We painted our nails, snuggled in bed, and went on walks. For some reason, those items on my ‘to do’ list were easily put aside. I didn’t stress about time. Sure there were some temper tantrums and time-outs. We even took breaks from each when needed.

The highlight of our days was a trip to the Fort Worth Science Museum. For almost three hours we just wandered around. No agenda, no rush. The girls giggled as we built paper airplanes that couldn’t fly and gasped at the stars in the planetarium. I didn’t worry about seeing it all; instead I savored the things that really interested my daughters.

And when it was all said and done, I can honestly say it was fun. I did “Daddy Days” justice and lived in the moment. For a few days we suspended time and to-dos. We put chores and shopping on hold. I couldn’t do it everyday, because those things do HAVE to be done. And those things are ‘mom’s job’--that’s just the way the world works. But when I get the chance again, I will shake off my ‘mommy hat’ and put on daddy’s instead. Because everyone deserves to have some fun- even mom.

Don't forget to stop by later for our 'linked linky' party, Cowgirl Up! Link your post here and it automatically appears on 4 amazing blogs. All types of post are welcome- it is a party to celebrate the 'can do' spirit embodied by the Cowgirl. Hope to see ya'll there :)
