Crafty How-To: Cabinet Door Chalkboards, TWO Ways

Ever have a decor problem? Well I did-- and after posting about it on my Crafty Texas Girls facebook page, I found a solution! Thank you to everyone who gave me ideas. Seriously, I loved all of your suggestions and was quite impressed that there were several men who shared great ideas too!

If you missed the facebook post, here is a quick recap. Basically we have this island with three drawers.  The drawers have glass fronts, with a little section that is separate from the rest of the drawer. It is about 2.5 inches wide. When we bought the house, the glass portion was filled with tri-colored pasta. Unfortunately, it got buggy. So after thoroughly cleaning it all out, I left the 'display portion' of the drawers empty, for over a year! I kept thinking I would find something to put in there, but I didn't want the bugs to return. My sweet facebook readers had a ton of suggestions. They reminded me-- I didn't have to fill the drawers with food!

One reader even suggested I keep it simple with chalkboard paint. And since you know how I love all things 'black&white'. I decided to give that idea a try. I was a little nervous to paint the glass with chalkboard paint. It seemed so permanent! So instead, I used black posterboard and a white paint pen to create a similar look.

With the 'faux cabinet door chalkboards', I can change out the words for the holidays or with inspirational quotes, or whatever I want! I just have to write on a black poster board card and pop in into the drawer. Right now, I like "You can never have too much happy". But I am sure I will be rotating it soon. I can turn the posterboard cards over and write something new whenever I feel the need. I went ahead and pre-cut extra cards for future use. The white paint pen gives you a nice white 'chalky' look

UPDATE: After I lived with the 'faux chalkboards for a few days, I realized how great the black chalkboards looked in our kitchen. And I got brave. Sooo, I ran to Hobby Lobby and bought actual chalkboard paint. After a few coats of the paint on the glass, and waiting for 24 hours-they were done. I really like the 'faux' chalkboards that I made with posterboard, but I really LOVE the real chalkboards.

No turning back now!

I am so HAPPY with how they turned out!

What a happy way to start the weekend. Who do you turn to when you have a decor/design problem?
