The End of Supermom

Today I want to share an article I recently wrote for SouthlakeMoms.com. It touches on the pitfalls of perfection. I will admit, I  have spent way too much time chasing 'perfect'---only to find that it is something that can never be obtained. I am sure many of you can relate to my story and I hope you find comfort in my words.

Remember that mom? The one with the perfect outfit, fantastic hair, and well-behaved children. She baked homemade cookies and recycled everything.  I think we all called her “SuperMom”.  Her home was cleaned spotless each day and her husband always came home from work to a nutricious gourmet meal. She ‘showed’ us that we could have it all. And in between working out, carpool, and having a deliriously happy family- she made time to volunteer and run her own small business. Looking at her, we just knew if we worked hard enough, maybe we could ‘do it all’ too. If we were ‘good enough’, we could control our lives and perfection was just around the corner. Nothing was out of reach, if we only tried hard. Motherhood, homemaking, working, everything according to plan.  It could all be obtained.

I don’t think I ever really liked that woman.

But, she showed up at my home one day. Such an exhausting ‘friend.’ Always urging  ‘you can do it all yourself’-- full calendar and a big happy smile. I think every woman has met that “SuperMom”. Whether in real life or simply a figment of our imagination. She is the standard we set for ourselves. The woman we strive to be, so that everyone will be pleased. It is exhausting. Working alone to do it all, it is lonely. And in the end, it is empty. Because there is never an end. Enough is never enough. So after trying to please her, I have finally decided it is time for her to leave.

The era of SuperMom is over.  Turns out you can’t have it all. Something has to give. And when you spend your time working hard to create an image of perfection in everything, you find you don’t really enjoy anything.

And I’m not the only that feels this way. It seems a new trend in mothering has happened upon our culture. Or maybe I am just taking notice. Recently I have seen more books such as “Grace for the Good Girl” and websites like “Proverbs 31” that are advocating the woman that says, “I cannot do it all.”

In fact, by trying to do it all, we are missing out on what God has planned for us. No matter your religious beliefs, a life of working alone to create an appearance of perfection is not a happy or healthy life.  A woman who is striving to do it all ends up miserable. She misses out on the beautiful life right before her.

But the good news is  ‘what we are’ is not ‘who we are going to be’. We are a work in progress. And by acknowledging that SuperMom is not a fulfilling life, we can change. In the words of Pastor John McKellar, our life is like a garden. It takes daily work and struggle. We cannot simply plant a pretty garden with neat rows and fancy lattice. We must water, weed, and nurture it. We must work together with others- employ the help and companionship of friends and community. Life is not to ‘accomplish’ with a smile and cute outfit. It is a chance to grow, love and enjoy.

So if SuperMom is staying in your guest room, feel free to kick her out. Make some space on your calendar, ask others to help you, don’t be afraid to say ‘no’, and just let yourself be still. Remember all that grace and love you show others? Now is the time to show it to your self.

Thanksgiving Baking

For Thanksgiving we will be traveling 45 minutes to my in-law's home. Great grandparents, grandparents, siblings and cousins will all gather together to eat and count our blessings. Last Thanksgiving was actually when Maisy started walking for the first time!

And beyond the fried turkey my husband will cook, my girls and I will probably make our little pilgrim hats again. The "recipe" is perfect for little hands--Keebler fudge striped cookies, reese's mini-peanut butter cups, an m&m, and some icing to hold it all together.  Kids and adults seem to like em!

I have told you before, I am not much of cook. But I do enjoy baking. Here are a few recipes that have been making my mouth water. And since the pilgrim cookies are 'no bake', I might just have enough time to whip up one or two of these sweets to share with family on Thanksgiving. I am sure there will be plenty of pumpkin desserts anyway!

-Soft Sugar Cookies- these look the ones my Grandma used to make.

-Cheesecake Cookie Dough Bars

-German Chocolate Brownies

Do you have a 'signature dish'?  What are your plans for Thanksgiving day?

Crafty How To: Fall Turkeys

Like everyone else, I can't believe Thanksgiving is almost here.  And luckily we have had enough cool-ish days to make it feel like fall. The trees in North Texas are finally changing and the streets are now dusted with red, yellow, and orange leaves. We took our girls on a 'hunt' to gather some of the newly fallen leaves. Our bags also ended up with handfuls of acorns, pinecones and sticks as well.

When we got home, Afton and Maisy decided to sort our treasures.

And then it was time to get crafty. Since I only have one turkey decoration, we thought our fall pickings would be perfect for creating some Thanksgiving decor. With a bit of hot glue, the items from our nature walk were transformed into feathered friends.

Friends Don't Let Friends Shop Alone

Looking for a good 'Girls Night Out'? Well, if you are a decor enthusiast, try your local Pottery Barn.

My MOPS friends and I met up at our PB for a free after-hours private shopping event. We were treated to a 'tablescape' presentation that was filled with tips and tricks using Pottery Barn's newest holiday products. Basically 'tablescape' is just a fancy word for decorating your table. And this table could be the big long one in your dinning room, the small round one in your kitchen, or maybe an entry or side table.

The Story of my Keeping Space

It’s easy to decorate when you have an unlimited budget. But true creativity is born when you throw in a few restrictions- namely a tight budget. As crazy as it sounds, I am actually grateful for that restriction. I have found such satisfaction in the thrill of the hunt. In the world of home décor, there is no pride greater than scoring a great deal or creating a great knock-off, by hand!

So if you are ready to do something amazing in your home, don’t worry about your pocketbook. Fabulous for less is accessible to everyone. Case in point: coffee sacks. Those of you  follow me on Pinterest know I have a thing for coffee sacks. A few months back, I crafted beautiful pillows from these simple bags. They turned out perfect. But after I began collecting photos from across the blog world of furniture covered in coffee bags, I knew I wanted to take it further.

Then an opportunity presented itself. My daughter started Kindergarten and I found myself in need of an area to stash her ‘stuff’- the backpack, dance bag, cheer bag, and those shoes. Oh the shoes. I tried convincing my husband to help me demolish part of our laundry room to create a keeping area. But remember the ‘whole decorating with restrictions’ thing? Well, that came into play. So after a lot of thinking, talking, and shopping our home, we came up with a new plan. Take the table/bench from upstairs and use it in the garage to create a keeping space—and of course find a way to work a bit of ‘coffee bag love’ into the equation.

Here is what I started with. This table/bench actually ‘came with’ the first house we ever bought. The owner had found an old coffee table and used adhesive spray to attach a piece of upholstery foam to the top. Then fabric was stapled around it to create the bench. This piece has been painted and covered numerous times. It has sat at the end of beds and been put up against windows. But now- it is going to serve as the main piece in my ‘keeping area’.

Have you heard about... Ikea Hackers?

It's a cool website I happened upon about a month ago.  This site is a 'must see' for all of us that love strolling through the big blue store. It's a bit of DIY meets Ikea.

Jules, the brains behind 'Ikea Hackers' describes her site like this:
"IkeaHackers is a site about modifications on and repurposing of Ikea products. Hacks, as we call it here, may be as simple as adding an embellishment, some others may require power tools and lots of ingenuity. "

Check out some of the creations I found on Ikea Hackers:

-Interesting Art

-Modern Furniture transformed with a Traditional Twist

Jules continues, "This site exists largely due to the kind contribution of IKEA hackers from all over the globe. They submit their creations, with the hope of providing alternative ideas on Ikea products. Hopefully, their hacks will inspire you, perhaps even amuse. "

-Canopy Bed from Curtains and Clothesline

-The Ultimate Twin Highchair

-Ikea Doors turned Vintage Art

I submitted my Painted Curtains, you can view it here.

Have you hacked anything from Ikea? Post your hack on the site! Or just stop by and browse. You will be surprised at the creativity that Ikea inspires.
