Display Your Kids Art!

I love my girls art work. But once the papers start coming, they can pile up. Drawings, letters, scribbles, coloring pages... it can fill boxes, bins, and folders. What do you do with all of the art work? Is throwing it away *gasp* even an option??

In the 'good old days' we used to cover the fridge with sweet scribbles and tacky magnets. But when it becomes impossible to open the freezer door, it's time to start thinking of other ideas.

Luckily, we have options! Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, founder of Apartment Therapy recommends the best way to encourage creativity is choose an intentional, beautiful display space. And most importantly, don't be afraid to throw things out! Clearing out old art encourages fresh bursts of inspiration.

Frame it: Combine different pieces of art by using similar frames or mats.

Scan it: Shrink it down and create a collage. Or print them on 4x6 paper and put them in a photo album.

Hang it: Use a line, curtain rod, or even clip boards!

Whichever way you choose, be selective and keep things moving. Gillingham-Ryan says the art work should go up and down regularly. Instead of piles of work you save and never see, keep very little but display it beautifully.

Recently we created a clothesline for Afton's art display.

My hubby located the studs in our wall and installed these glass drawer pulls. He used 1.5 inch screws to hold them in place. The studs are key for keeping them in the wall.

Then we tied Afton's favorite yarn around the pulls to make the line. Tie it tight, the weight of the art will cause the line to sag a bit.

Afton likes to choose which pieces of art 'make it on the line'. The clothespins make them easy for her to switch out herself.

Maisy picked the other eye off the Mr. Sun. The only draw-back of a low line is that it's within reach of little sisters :)

She's pretty proud of her work!

Have a great weekend.

  1. I love seeing ideas like these! What a great way to encourage your child's creativity, but not be overwhelmed with their artwork.

  2. I love the idea of doing a picture collage for the year. It's hard because they do so much and you can't keep everything.
