Craft It: Pallet Art {Texas Sized}

Remember that great pallet my husband picked up off the side of the road for me? Well, we finally transformed it into a cool piece of art for our new 'Industrial Chic' backyard.

Jeff used a crow bar to take apart the pallet. I am happy he volunteered for that part. It took some prying and there were lots of crazy nails to deal with.  Then reassembled it by nailing most of the slats together. He made a 'N' shape base on the back. It made for secure slats on the front.

He handed it over to me for the fun part :) I used a Texas map from the gas station as a stencil. I cut out the shape of Texas and then traced around it on the pallet. Then I painted in the shape with silver acrylic paint. I added a small turquoise heart over the place we live.

We ended up adding two more slats, one to the top- and one to the bottom because this state is so big!

I had several people email me about pallet art, wanting to know any tips and tricks I could share.

Here is what I learned from our first 'pallet project':
1. You can find pallets on the side of the road! Free supplies--woohoo:)
2. Most pallet projects require you to take them apart. That old 'weathered' looking wood is what makes pallets so great.
3. Be careful of rusty nails when working with pallets.
4. Most pallets are treated to prevent bugs (but check for pests before you bring a pallet in your house)
5. Since many pallets are treated, burning un-used pallet wood can be dangerous.
6. What can you make with a pallet? What can't you make?! See my Pinterest board and "11 Ideas to Use Pallets in Your Home".

Our new pallet art now hangs in the backyard, the perfect DIY art for our the new Industrial Chic backyard we have been working on for the past few months. Stay tuned-- it's almost all done!

Do you have a place in your home that could use some pallet art?

  1. Great piece! Tell Jeff to rent a Sawsall or reciprocating blade saw. You slice right through the nails with that. They use spiral nails for those pallets...that's why they're so hard to remove!

  7. I love that our state has such a good shape for decorating! :) The shape of Texas just looks good on so many things, right? :) Y'all did a wonderful job and now I'm thinking I need to add some "Texas" items to my backyard as well. :) By the way, I love the color of your table and chairs.

  12. I saved fence board from our old fence and have been trying to figure out what to do with it. This is the perfect project for my leftover wood! Thanks for the great inspiration!!

  13. I always love Texas art :-) I have the requisite iron Lone Star on my yard gate, but I think a pallet Texas flag and state outline would look great on the fence on either side of the gate.

    Miss Flibbertigibbet has it right - a sawzall is da bomb! for taking apart pallets. I bought an inexpensive one at Harbor Freight, and bought blades from Home Depot and use it for pallets and tons of other things - well worth it's price!
