Moss Monogram Wreath for Spring

New season, new wreath! This time I was itching to make something with moss.

I wandered around Hobby Lobby on a Saturday afternoon and found this thick grapevine wreath. Since my door is black, the white chippy paint caught my eye. I decided to pair it with a moss covered 'c' for our last name and then use some yellow chevron burlap ribbon I had at home for a bow. When I went to pay for my supplies, the clerk at HL said- 'your wreath looks like a big white tire'. Ha! I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Eeerr- not sure a 'white tire' was the look I was going for, but to each their own?!

To begin, I wrapped the wooden 'c' with moss ribbon and secured it with hot glue. This was messy, so I worked in the garage.

Then I made a simple bow with the yellow chevron burlap ribbon. I hot glued that to the top of the wreath.

Finally, I hung the 'c' with some jute twine. Since the wreath already came painted white, this was a pretty easy craft.

Now I need to plant something bright and green in those urns. Maybe fox tail ferns again?

And I can't get the words of that Hobby Lobby clerk out of my head! Will people drive by my house and think I make a wreath from a white tire? To each their own...:)

11 Unique Spring Wreaths

After several ice/snow days, the weather in North Texas has turned. The past few days have been absolutely GOR.GEOUS. We have been outside soaking in the sunshine at the park, riding bikes, running, and walking the dogs. All this outside time has me totally ready for Spring!

I know that it's not here yet for most of the country (and we will probably have some more wacky cold weather in Texas). But Spring is close enough that we can at least make (or buy via Etsy!) our Spring Wreaths now. A little preparation never hurt anyone right?!

1. DIY Monogram Wreath

2. Woodland Wreath

6. Boxwood Monogram Door Wreath (doesn't this remind you of the garland one I made at Christmas?? See it here for the tutorial

Which is your favorite? Are you seeing signs of Spring in your area yet?

Monogram Garland Wreath and Free DIY Classes

I heard from my bloggy friend Aimee that the Home Depot offers free DIY classes about once a month. So on Thursday night, Afton and I went on a date to try out the "Do It Herself" class and make our own Monogram Garland Wreath.

The classes are designed for women, but Afton was able to join in with some help. The project was to use a Ryobi saw to create a wooden monogram and then decorate it. Here was our inspiration... you can see the full tutorial on how to create this Monogram Garland Wreath on Home Depot's website- just click here.

This was my first time using jigsaw- pretty cool.

When the letter was cut, I wrapped it in garland and added a bow. We were thrilled with our finished projects.

The next class is held in January, making a storage unit inspired by Ana White. To find a class near you, visit Home Depot's website and then click on classes. You can find the "Do It Herself" class closest to you. Every lady should know how to use a saw!

Decorating a Mantle for Fall

*Disclosure: I was sent product to review, but as always- all opinions are my own!

In the past, I have made myself wait until September to start decorating for fall. But this year, I am throwing caution to the wind and starting early!

Balsam Hill contacted me about reviewing one of their wreaths, and that was all the motivation I needed to get in the mood for Fall decor.

I chose the Harvest Foilage Fall Wreath. I have been in love with this style of wreath for awhile, but I could never find one locally that was this full. I am so impressed with the amount of 'goodies' on this wreath.

When I decorate my mantle, the wreath is always the center-piece. Then I build around it with accessories. Getting started, I wasn't exactly sure of my 'theme'. But when I saw the colors of the leaves in the wreath, I decided on Metallics and Nature. (Which really means I want a lot of gold and silver accessories mixed in with pumpkins!) Since the pumpkins aren't out in stores yet, I got started on 'shopping my house' for the accessories I wanted to pair with the wreath. The painted brick fireplace makes a great backdrop for the metallics.

Details on my painted brick fireplace here
I want to add a few pumpkins too, I am thinking I will spray paint them gold. And then mix in some white pumpkins too. I like to keep my holiday decor along the same lines as my house decor, lots of neutrals with a variety of textures.

Are you ready for to get started on decorating too? As a special treat, Balsam Hill is offering a coupon just for Crafty Texas Girls fans. Craft It: Easter Decor for the Front Door

Inspired by my mantle, I decided to take my Easter decor out to the front door. I wanted to repeat the same theme that I used inside: burlap, white, light blue, and some chevron.

Christmas Mantle 2012

I love decorating for Christmas. Getting the boxes down from the attic and unpacking our holiday treasures from year to year just makes me happy. I like to reuse my decorations instead of buying new things each year. I think if you can find different ways to display them, it can make them feel 'new'. I decided to make this year's theme "Silver and Gold" with some red accents.

The mantle is the focal point of our home, so I started there. An old frame was made new again with some gold spray paint. Then I used red stain ribbon to hang a simple evergreen wreath in the middle.

Guest Post: Monogram Fall Rag-Wreath
Happy Friday! Today I am welcoming Jessica from "Sweat is My Sanity". I 'met' Jessica through the blog-world way back when. I love reading her blog and following her adventures in running and life with kids. She is witty, creative, and has a big heart. I was thrilled when Jessica agreed to be a guest here today. Take it away Jessica!

Hi Y'all!

Crafty How-To: Fall Mantle 2012

It is Officially Fall
As much as I resisted decorating for fall while we still have summer weather, I finally caved in.
I decorated my mantle and made 2 new wreaths.

My downfall was the orange burlap I found on-sale at JoAnn's a few weeks ago (if you follow me on facebook, you might have scored some on sale too!)

So on Saturday, armed with my orange burlap, one child napping, and the other happily playing in the yard, I sat on my driveway and made a wreath. When cutting burlap, working outside is preferable because it is messy! I ended up making 2 different types of fall wreaths, but today I will just show you the one I did for the mantle. (Come back later for the other one!)

My mantle wreath is based on the 'infamous' burlap wreath from last year. But this season, it is *new and improved* because instead of regular brown burlap, I used orange!

Burlap Wreath Tutorial
So if we weren't bloggy friends last fall, or you missed the tutorial, here is how it is done:
-Grab one wire hanger and untwist the top.
-Then shape it into a circle using your hands.
-Finally weave strips of 3 inch wide burlap on the hanger by poking the hanger through the middle of the burlap.

Tips for success

1. The more burlap, the better. Last year I only used 2 yards of burlap and it wanted to sag. So this time around I used 3-3.5 yards of burlap.

2. Create 'tension' in the burlap by twisting and flipping the burlap as you weave it back and forth on the hanger. The more twists and turns, the fuller the wreath.

Shop Your House

With my new wreath in hand, I decided it was time to spruce up my mantle. I cleaned everything off and started with a blank slate. Since my fireplace is painted dark brown, I think it looks best with contrasting decor. So, I added white pumpkins, candle sticks, orange pumpkins, books, white raffia orbs, and some mercury glass. You could also use vases, plates, bowls, candles or anything that complements your color/design scheme.

Everything on my fall mantle is from my house. I like to 'shop' my other rooms when decorating for the holidays- no need to go out and buy a bunch of themed items. I'd rather use things I already have and can use again. I think it keeps holiday decor looking a bit more chic!
