Valentines Ideas (Save for Next Year!)

Timing is everything. Which is why I am laughing as I write this post. Who wants great ideas for Valentines... on February 17th???? Well I am hoping you do! Or at least you are curious to see what we did for Valentines. And if you are sooo over the whole 'pink hearts and love blah blah blah' well... I hope you pin this post and then come back and read it sometime in February 2018.

Here are my favorites from this past month. I had so many cute ideas planned for Valentines this year and happily we got to do almost all of them!

21 Crafty Valentine Projects

It's Valentines week! So today I am sharing a round-up of my favorite Valentine projects. Lots of ideas for parties, decor and things to give.

Crafty Valentine's Party

When it comes to Valentine's Day, the crafting options are unlimited. Handmade cards, creative Valentine's boxes for school, cute 'love' decorations for the home, and adorable confections that are 'almost' too pretty to eat. There are so many fun things to make for Valentine's-- it's hard to fit it all in on February 14th! So this year, I decided to host a "Valentine's Crafty Party" for my girls. I invited over a few of their friends, stocked up on red paper hearts, yummy treats and then the fun began...

Hang Some Hearts

I have had the same Valentine decorations since 2010. They include paper hearts hot glued to jute twine that I hang from my chandelier, the word LOVE cut from sturdy felt and strung on a piece of ribbon that I drape across my china hutch, and a hand-made felt envelope that I use to write 'love notes' to the girls during "Valentines Week".

Even though it's the same thing every year, my girls still get excited when I bring them out. I think everyone likes a reason to celebrate. And hanging some hearts makes it feel like something special is just about to happen.

The girls came home from church yesterday in the mood to make rubber band jewlery.
Afton prefers to finger loom than use the acutal 'rainbow loom'.
And as hard she tried, Maisy just couldn't quite get the hang of looming. But she was happy to try.

This year I printed off some new Valentine lunch box jokes. Some of these are going into my girls' lunch boxes. I am attaching others to candy bars for the girls to give to their teachers and coaches.

I am super excited about these t-shirts I bought at Forever21 for my girls to wear on Friday. Pizza is my Valentine too :)

And I am hoping to make these cute Cupid's love arrows on Saturday morning using store bought donut holes.

And for my 'Valentine' aka my husband... I am making him these. Jeff is not a dessert guy, but every once in a while he does appreciate some good red velvet topped with cream cheese.

I kind of love Valentine's Day .

Easy Valentine Boxes

Hello! This has been the longest break from blogging I have taken in 5 years. Christmas came and went. Then the New Year rolled around. And I just never sat down to blog. I felt like I didn't have anything to say. There are so many talented bloggers now and their projects are so amazing. The photography is flawless, the ideas are original, it is all so good. I didn't think the Internet needed anything that I had to say or make. So I stopped writing.

I still posted on Instagram @craftytexasgirl a lot. Because that is easy and fun.

But I gave up coming here and writing. It seemed like too much fuss for really no reason. What did I have to say that was 'so important' it should be published online??

Now this lady! She had some things to say that are worth reading.
So weeks and weeks passed and no blog posts... Then over the weekend, my girls and I worked on a holiday project. Nothing huge, just something for fun.  I helped my girls make their Valentine boxes. The weather was dreary and we were stuck in the house. Crafting is one of my favorite ways to pass the time.

While we were working, I realized why I hadn't been posting about crafts much anymore.
To do a really good craft post, one with great lighting and fabulous photos, you need to stage everything. You need to look at the light, the background, the composition. You need to dress your kids in a cute Valentine outfit and situate things 'just so'.

And honestly, I am just not in the mood to do that much right now.

So I decided to take photos with my iPhone instead and enjoy the moment with my kids. They did most of the work themselves, like real kids do. These are not 'Pinterest-looking' Valentines boxes. These are real Valentine boxes. The kind most people make. The kind that don't go viral on the Internet or get featured on Craft Gawker.

These are shoe boxes covered with craft paper from Target and globs of Elmer's glue.

This is a box 'designed' by an 8 year old who loves neon stripes and sticker letters.

These are hearts cut out by a five year old who is working on her 'scissor skills'.

I am hoping the Internet still needs this kind of craft blogging. Because this is all I am really wanting to do anymore. It isn't shiny or fancy. It isn't the stuff 'craft dreams' are made of. It is messy and it is sticky. And when it was all over, I had to clean it all up.

But this is what I like to do now. Spend time with my kids. Make stuff with them. And take iphotos of us having fun.

The sun will rise. The sun will set. THIS is all there really is...

The rest is just stuff.

Love Bugs : Gummy Worm Valentine

When it came to choosing a Valentine to give, Maisy was only concerned about one thing-- the candy. I showed her several fun ideas on Pinterest for DIY Valentines (here) and the one she picked had gummy worms!

After seeing this idea on Pinterest, I searched  for this "Love Bug" Valentine printable to download. But I couldn't find it! So, I just made my own printable. Today, I tracked down the original source-- credit for this adorable idea goes completely to Dandee-Designs and The Better Martha. Thank you to those ladies for their creativity.

The idea of this gummy worm Valentine is to make it look like a little mason jar filled with worms (aka 'love bugs'). To do this, I filled small plastic baggies from Hobby Lobby (these are about 4 inches long by 3 inches wide) with 4 or 5 gummy worms.

Then I printed the "Love Bug" Valentine on red construction paper and cut around the jars. I used an "x acto" knife to cut the hole in the middle. And since we are in love with washi tape around here, I used two pieces of tape to hold it in place on top of the baggie.

You could also slip the printable directly into the baggie like this from The Better Martha

Below is the printable I made.
Just drag it onto your desktop and print on your favorite card stock or construction paper!

And if you prefer 'no candy' Valentines, just fill your baggies with plastic bugs like this from Dandee-Designs!

Your little Valentine will love passing out "Love Bugs" to their friends at school :)

DIY "Frozen Olaf" Valentines

Are your kids obsessed with the Disney movie "Frozen"?  Mine too-- we have the books, the wigs, the dolls, and the music. So it was only fitting that my seven year old would request a "Frozen" Valentine.

We like to make our own (surprise, surprise) so I let the girls search my Valentine Pinterest board (here) with me to find an idea for a cute crafty handmade Valentine. This free Olaf printable via "Sweet Creek Moon blog(click here to download it) caught her eye. The Valentines come 4 to a page. So I printed them on light pink card stock. On the back she wrote the name of each of her classmates and then signed her name with a little heart.

She used washi tape to attach a chocolate heart to each one. (If you don't have washi tape, you can find it at Target. It's just fancy tape!) Then my daugther drew a line from the candy down to Olaf's hand. It's a "string" to make Olaf look like he is holding a heart balloon. "Some people are worth melting for."

I suggested to we add some glitter glue to make Olaf sparkly. My daughter looked at me and sighed. "Mom. They are just Valentines." Good advice from a second grader.

So whether you make or buy your Valentines, have fun with it. After all, "They are just Valentines."

Simple Valentine Decorations

I like to decorate for almost every holiday- even Valentines!

I don't like to go 'over the top'. But after years of teaching elementary school, I feel I just have to change up the house a bit for each holiday. A few red hearts can go along way and make your home feel festive for February 14th. Downstairs, I kept with a red, black and white theme. Upstairs, the girls have a little V-day decor in pastel colors. Some of our Valentines decorations are old favorites that are handmade. This year I made a few new additions :)  Come along and take a peek inside my house and gather some ideas for decorating your home for Valentine's Day.

1. Simple Valentine Wreath- To make your own, wrap a straw wreath with several strips of fabric. Secure with straight pins. Add some scrapbook paper hearts to the bottom with a few dots of hot glue.

2.  Button Heart Art on a Mini Canvas- this black and white is on my desk downstairs. (I adore black and white!) And my daughter made a pastel one in her room upstairs. See how to make your own with supplies I found at your local craft store by clicking (here).

3. LOVE Banner- make this using stiff felt and a stencil. Thread ribbon through the letters to hang. See more on making a LOVE banner (here) .

4. Heart Garland - I made these a few years ago to hang from the chandelier. But this year I decided to add them to the dining room chairs. My girls think it makes our table look 'like a party'. Festive!
See how I made my heart garland with scrapbook paper and jute twine (here).

5. Valentine Envelope- This is my girls favorite Valentine tradition. The week leading up to Valentines, I leave 'love notes' in this envelope for them. They love checking the mail each morning to see what is inside. I made the envelope from stiff felt, you can see the tutorial (here)

6. Framed Valentine Printable- This is an easy one! Just print our your favorite Valentine printable and add it to a red frame. My frame is from Hobby Lobby, the printable art is (here)

7. A Heart for David- And this guy, well since Maisy talks to him almost everyday, I thought it would be fun if he got dressed up for the holiday. This is his heart 'toga'. I think he likes it, and Maisy got a kick out of it. (His toga is actually 'heart garland' - shhh don't tell!)
