Easy DIY Tassel Jewelry

I have seen tassel jewelry popping up all over. I think I have 20 different 'tassel' tutorials saved on Pinterest. And in a moment of 'weakness' I actually bought a tassel necklace last year (gasp!! instead of making one!) Because sometimes, it's just waaaaaay easier to B-U-Y than D-I-Y.

But after making these beautiful necklaces at home, I am changing my mind. Making your own tassel jewelry doesn't have to be hard!

Be on trend! Here's how to make your own Tassel Jewelry.

Supplies Needed:
-Embroidery Thread (similar here)
-Scissors
-Hemp string for necklace (similar here)
-Or choose elastic if making a bracelet (similar here)

1. Cut your string- I used a hemp string for making a necklace. If you are making a bracelet, choose elastic. Make it longer than you think you will need- just in case!

Depending on how thick you want your tassel, you can just slip the string through and make your tassel.

OR- if you want a 'fatter tassel' like I did, then you need to open the embroidery thread package and double the thread over to make loop that is twice as wide but half as long. Now slip your necklace or bracelet string through the loop.

2.   Snip off a long piece of the thread, use it wrap around the 'neck' to make a 'head' for the tassel. Tie in a knot to secure.

3. Now snip the bottom and trim to desired length.

4. Add beads and tie the string to finish!

Later, I used elastic string to make a bracelet. I used metallic thread to tie around the tassel- I love how it turned out!

Special thanks to my mom (aka At Home with Jemma!!) and girls for making these with me-- they are my favorite to people to craft with :) It was the perfect way to spend the afternoon.

My 'crafting partners' for this project-- this girls were so happy to craft with Grammy.

Better than Jewelry

Do you feel the way I do? You know, that chandeliers and better than jewelry?

As you know, I have always used my breakfast nook as a sitting area. But until now, the lighting hasn't really matched the decor.

So on a recent trip to Lee Lighting, I found my way into the "chandy room". Afton and I stood with our mouths gaping open as we 'ooed' and 'aahhed' at the sparkly lights.

We pulled ourselves out of the room long enough to pick out this gorgeous new lantern for our entry way.

But then we ended up right back under the crystals.

My sweet husband was kind enough to 'support' the purchase. And we left with a glamorous new chandelier. He happily installed it,

and then laughed as I laid down on the rug and stared up at my new favorite thing.

Needing to add a chandelier to your decor?

-Make one from mardi gras beads

-Ikea makes an adorable one too

-Find an old brass one in a thrift store and paint it

-Or save for a really long time... and get one like this!

Do you have a good 'chandy love' story? Leave me a comment and tell me about it!

Upcycled T-Shirt Necklace

I am relaxing with my family this week. In case you missed it on SouthlakeMoms, here's a great way to turn an old t-shirt into a great necklace.

I love re-fashioning something old into a fabulous new project. And I am not alone; ‘upcycling’ is the newest trend in handmade creations. Basically, upcycling is taking something you would normally throw out and using it to create something better. Upcycling differs from recycling in that the quality of the materials used during an upcycle project are actually improved. Some examples of upcycle projects include transforming a droopy old dress into a chic apron, using juice boxes to fashion a fancy purse, or reconfiguring a rubber rain boot into an adorable garden planter.

Through my adventures in blogging, I had seen a few versions of the “Upcycled T-shirt Necklace” floating around the web. Miss Martha Stewart herself even created one on her daytime talk show with Queen Latifah! But it wasn’t until I recently spied a similar necklace at an high-end boutique for $35 that I decided to make one myself. Best of all, this gorgeous accessory costs nothing to make and since it upcycled- it is environmentally friendly!

Supplies Needed to Create an Upcycled T-shirt Necklace:
-Rotary cutter or scissors
-Knit t-shirt

I used to adore this purple t-shirt, but sadly it has seen better days. I can say that it was a really good knit shirt, the kind that is stretchy, smooth and soft. I was excited that by upcycling, I could give my old shirt a 'second life'.

Some important things to note: This project hinges on the stretchiness of the cotton. Therefore it works best with a shirt that is not ribbed. Best results are found by using a form-fitting shirt, not a big boxy one.

To begin making your T-Shirt necklace, simply lay the shirt out on a flat surface. I like to use my rotary cutter and board. It makes it simple to cut straight lines quickly and it is easier to keep track of the measurements for each strip. But of course, you can use scissors if needed.
Next, cut the shirt into 1-1.5 inch strips. Keep an eye on your measurements, but know that they don’t have to be perfect.

Once the shirt is completely cut into strips, it is time to stretch out each piece. Use a ‘taffy pulling’ motion to stretch the shirt. The fabric will roll and become skinny.

Once you have stretched all the pieces, gather them up and use one of the strips to tie them all together.

I love pairing this necklace with a simple tank top, sundress, or sleeveless shirt. I think it would be adorable in coral, turquoise, or even a bright green. I layered it with a silver chain for some interest. You could also add embellishments to the fabric with hot glue. Think metallic or shiny- like metal studs or a few crystals. Or be patriotic for the Fourth of July; imagine it done in red, worn with a blue and white striped top. The “T-Shirt Necklace” creates a unique, chic look.

It is the perfect necklace for summer- simple, free, and a great upcycle project! How would you wear the “T-Shirt Necklace”?  Have you upcycled anything in your home?

Valentine's Jewelry

Hoping for jewelry on Valentine's Day? Why not make your own?!

I saw this idea over at "One Charming Party". She actually used real gumballs to make this sweet necklace. But I decided real candy wouldn't last long with my girl :)

So we went shopping and bought some wooden beads and ribbon. (Happily they were half off!)

Then I cut off a length of ribbon. To make a necklace like the candy one above, the ribbon needs to be longer than you think you will need in order to tie knots in between each bead. So cut if off as if you are making a necklace that will reach the top of your pants.

Finally string on the beads, one by one, making sure to alternate beads and knots. I added a bow to Afton's when we finished.

My necklace was even easier, no knots. Just string the beads on!

Happy Valentine's Day!
