If You Are Potty Trained, Thank Your Mother

Seriously, call your Mother now! Everyone who has potty-trained a child deserves some kind of medal, trophy, or at least a Hallmark card congratulating them on their success.

I am currently in the throws of potty training now with my 2.5 year old. And all I can say is “Wow. Wow. WOW.”.

Now this isn’t my first time riding the ‘potty train’. Yes we call it the ‘potty train’; my daughter literally thinks there is some kind of potty train that will be pulling up to our house any day. Now that I think about it, wouldn’t that be fantastic?! Some kind of Polar Express train for two year olds? They would hop on one night in diapers and come back home the next day in underwear!

But back to reality…. I really do have a success story- my 6 year old is a fully functioning, potty-using kid. So I know I can do it, I have done it before! However, over the past 3 years, the memory of this potty business has faded.

And as it turns out that things that you need to know for potty training are actually pretty important life lessons as well. So if you are at that stage in life where you are up to your elbows in diapers or if you rode that potty train years ago, don’t worry. I will save you the time and trouble and share my insights with you.

Spring Break

Today at 2:45 marked the 'official' start of our Spring Break. We celebrated by going to see the "Lorax" after school. Are your kiddos out of school for an entire week too? Not going out of town? Then check out my article over at SouthlakeMoms.com. I'll share my plan for filling those days with fun activities that your kiddos will love.

Have a great weekend!

Keep It Simple

Have the holiday crazies hit your home yet? Or did they arrive last month? Seems they set in earlier every year. Kinda like the Christmas decorations at Hobby Lobby! At my house, things feel calm… until I glance at my calendar and my then add another person to my gift list. That’s when my eye starts to twitch and I realize I need to get off facebook and getting working!  In times like these, I like to remind myself something my Dad always said; “The only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.”

So armed with that kernel of wisdom, I am going to do two things. The first one is easy; I am forcing myself to limit our family activities this holiday season. If I want to keep the focus on Christmas, then it is up to me to keep our obligations under control and make time to enjoy the real meaning of the season. Easier said than done, but Christmas only comes once a year and no one can enjoy it if ‘mom goes crazy’.

Second I am going to give meaningful gifts. Remember that long list I mentioned? Well in truth that list is long because it is filled with the names of people we love. People who play a significant role in our lives. Now some of them will be getting gift cards and such. I find that ‘handmade’ isn’t quite as fabulous to men! But I feel there is a need to make a few special gifts. Handmade gifts that are not only fun to make, but gifts that are also pretty simple too.

After scouring the blog world, I have compiled a few sweet, simple handmade gift ideas. The details for all of these projects can be found on my pinterest board: http://pinterest.com/craftytexasgirl/craft-it/

  1. Monogram Rug- Use fabric paint to personalize a rug or doormat.
  2. Colored Pencil Jewelry- Cut colored pencils up and string on a cord.
  3. Chunky Frame- Paint and layer frames for a unique look.
  4. Pincushion Teacup- No sew, perfect gift for the crafty type!

  1.  Burlap Memo Board- Using burlap and nail head- what’s not to love?!
  2. Pom Pom Necklace- Floral jewelry inspired by Anthropologie.
  3. Jewelry Hanger- Chicken wire and a chunky frame.
  4. Fancy Backpack- Dress up a bag with ruffles and a flower.

And if that isn’t enough inspiration for you, try your hand at a few of the projects I created and blogged about- these fun ideas are all featured over on one of my favorite online magazines:  SouthlakeMoms.

  1. T-Shirt Necklace- Upcycle your t-shirt to create a statement piece.
  2. Custom Art- Distress old wood and add a favorite quote.
  3. Funky Camera Strap: Fancy up your camera strap with some fabric.
  4. Headband Holder: Use an old oatmeal can to store headbands with flair.

Just remember, when Christmas is all said and done, the things your family will remember aren’t really even ‘things’.  Instead they will hold on to the moments spent together. So whether that time is spent relaxing at home or working on a project together- your children will treasure those memories for years to come.

Holiday Fun

If you live in North Texas and are looking for some Holiday fun, you are in luck. Grapevine is the self-proclaimed "Christmas Capital of Texas"!

Tonight the city is kicking off the Christmas season with the annual Parade of Lights. We have gone the past few years and have always been impressed with the floats and performances in our little town. The parade starts at 7pm on Main Street. More details can be found by clicking here.

And with Christmas vacation just around the corner, I have compiled a list of a few other festive activities around the metroplex for SouthlakeMoms.com.  New this year is the "Gift of Lights" at Texas Motor Speedway- which features 1.5 miles of light displays.

The Gift of Lights is a 'self-driven' tour that leads you under the TMS. For more information about this and other fabulous, local Christmas attractions- like the North Pole Express and Ice Skating outdoors in Grapevine, pop over to SouthlakeMoms.com and check out my article- "Sam's Picks for Holiday Fun".

The End of Supermom

Today I want to share an article I recently wrote for SouthlakeMoms.com. It touches on the pitfalls of perfection. I will admit, I  have spent way too much time chasing 'perfect'---only to find that it is something that can never be obtained. I am sure many of you can relate to my story and I hope you find comfort in my words.

Remember that mom? The one with the perfect outfit, fantastic hair, and well-behaved children. She baked homemade cookies and recycled everything.  I think we all called her “SuperMom”.  Her home was cleaned spotless each day and her husband always came home from work to a nutricious gourmet meal. She ‘showed’ us that we could have it all. And in between working out, carpool, and having a deliriously happy family- she made time to volunteer and run her own small business. Looking at her, we just knew if we worked hard enough, maybe we could ‘do it all’ too. If we were ‘good enough’, we could control our lives and perfection was just around the corner. Nothing was out of reach, if we only tried hard. Motherhood, homemaking, working, everything according to plan.  It could all be obtained.

I don’t think I ever really liked that woman.

Source: google.com via Samantha on Pinterest

But, she showed up at my home one day. Such an exhausting ‘friend.’ Always urging  ‘you can do it all yourself’-- full calendar and a big happy smile. I think every woman has met that “SuperMom”. Whether in real life or simply a figment of our imagination. She is the standard we set for ourselves. The woman we strive to be, so that everyone will be pleased. It is exhausting. Working alone to do it all, it is lonely. And in the end, it is empty. Because there is never an end. Enough is never enough. So after trying to please her, I have finally decided it is time for her to leave.

The era of SuperMom is over.  Turns out you can’t have it all. Something has to give. And when you spend your time working hard to create an image of perfection in everything, you find you don’t really enjoy anything.

And I’m not the only that feels this way. It seems a new trend in mothering has happened upon our culture. Or maybe I am just taking notice. Recently I have seen more books such as “Grace for the Good Girl” and websites like “Proverbs 31” that are advocating the woman that says, “I cannot do it all.”

In fact, by trying to do it all, we are missing out on what God has planned for us. No matter your religious beliefs, a life of working alone to create an appearance of perfection is not a happy or healthy life.  A woman who is striving to do it all ends up miserable. She misses out on the beautiful life right before her.

But the good news is  ‘what we are’ is not ‘who we are going to be’. We are a work in progress. And by acknowledging that SuperMom is not a fulfilling life, we can change. In the words of Pastor John McKellar, our life is like a garden. It takes daily work and struggle. We cannot simply plant a pretty garden with neat rows and fancy lattice. We must water, weed, and nurture it. We must work together with others- employ the help and companionship of friends and community. Life is not to ‘accomplish’ with a smile and cute outfit. It is a chance to grow, love and enjoy.

So if SuperMom is staying in your guest room, feel free to kick her out. Make some space on your calendar, ask others to help you, don’t be afraid to say ‘no’, and just let yourself be still. Remember all that grace and love you show others? Now is the time to show it to your self.

Time out for Mom

Happy Saturday! Today I thought I would talk about something besides crafting :) Instead I thought I would share a bit of my personal life outside my home!

Every mom needs a break, a time-out from laundry, homework, and problem solving. No matter how much you love your kiddos, everyone needs a chance to go out, dress up, and just chat with friends. I count myself lucky to have some sweet friends who love any excuse to do just that.  So now that the kiddos are back in school, it’s time to plan a night out with the girls. Here’s how to make the most of your night away!

Who’s Invited:
Look at who you know. I have several groups of friends that like to celebrate “Girls Night Out”.  Think about the fun girl from MOPS, or the sweet mom you met at preschool, how about some of the gals you drink coffee with at playdates, even neighbors, or the ladies on your running team- there is always someone who is wanting to go out. Sometimes the group is small, other times the group might take over several tables. I like having the different types of friends to go out with. And occasionally those groups mingle and everyone ends up together. Always encourage the ‘bring a friend rule’ so the groups can keep growing and changing. I am firm believer in the ‘more the merrier’- you never know when you are going to meet a new friend.

Set a Date:
Some people like to know way in advance and others do well with last minute outings. So try both ways and see what works best. Set up a standing date- maybe the second Tuesday of every month. Or if it has been ‘one of those days’ and you need a breather, just text some friends and see who is willing to meet you at a moment’s notice.

What to Do:
We are fortunate to live an area with lots to offer, but no matter where you are- you can find something fun to do as long as you have great company. There are a ton of activities, restaurants, and stores that are the perfect for hosting a group of girls. Some of the best “Girls Night Out” range from relaxing over dinner to breaking a sweat in a new class.

A few personal favorites have been:
-Yoga at Cowboys Stadium: For a small fee, groups of yogis (no experience necessary) are given a special tour of the stadium and then practice yoga to live music right on the turf. Not many people can say they have done a ‘wagon wheel’ on the Cowboys star!

-Cinema Grill: When “Sex in the City 2” came out, the theater hosted a red carpet affair. Nothing like eating, chatting and watching Carrie and Mr.Big with your best girlfriends. After the movie ended, the boutique next door opened their doors for a exclusive “SC2” shopping event.

-Live Music and Tastings at Local Vineyards: Each Thursday night,  our local vineyard hosts  “Rhythm and Wine”. It is a variety of live music paired with local wine. The vineyard also offers cheese, fruit and cracker pairings with their tastings.

-Explore Your City: Grab a limo and then head to dinner in your nearest downtown. For us, a new group of restaurants have opened up off West 7th  in Fort Worth and the great atmosphere and creative food are a nice escape. I highly recommend “Tillman’s Roadhouse”- the cuisine and décor are worth the drive!

Other Ideas:
 - Group Classes
Zumba/Yoga/Pilate
 -Get Creative
Painting with a Twist
Pottery
Sewing
-Expand your Palate
Try new foods or participate in a wine tasting
-Shopping
Many small boutiques will host private shopping for you and a few friends
Antiquing- hunt for treasure together
-Do Some Good
Sort Clothing and Treasures at resale shops to benefit local charities
Work on a project like Habitat for Humanity

Make it a Habit: Don’t wait for a birthday or special occasion to get together again. Try to meet up once a month. It might seem hard to schedule, but once everyone is out together- the effort will be worth it. Try setting up a private facebook page to organize the next night out. Or keep in touch with emails and texts. Cultivating friendships for yourself is just as important as the ones you encourage your children to have. Support, smiles and a chance to share can do wonders for any woman. In the end, a relaxed happy mom is a better mom!

Creating A Unique Home

When it comes to home décor, I have become a bit obsessed. For years I didn’t really pay much attention to all the details that go into a well-dressed home. Maybe it was because I was busy working full-time or it could have been because I was pre-occupied with being a new mother. But now that I am home and my children are on a decent sleep schedule, I have new hobby. And it all started when a friend forwarded me a few DIY blogs. With a few clicks of the mouse, my mind was racing as images of re-finishing furniture, sewing curtains, and spray-painting lamps passed before my eyes. Then I had an epiphany—I could do that!

So after a year of pouring over catalogs, countless hours of reading home improvement blogs, and numerous hot glue gun burns- I think I am beginning to figure it out. To me the secret of creating a unique home that you truly love comes down to a few simple details.

1.  Find Your Style: Decorating is overwhelming! Walk into any home store and you are bombarded by knickknacks, prints, and furniture. It is hard to imagine how it will look in your house or how it will even all go together. So before you begin, spend some time thinking about the big picture. Websites like HGTV, House Beautiful, and countless blogs are loaded with images of homes. Start a file of what you like. Flip through magazines and tear out photos. Then look at all the images together- what are the common themes in each photo? Are you drawn to white cabinets, bold paint colors, or modern furniture? What do you want the feel of your home to be? Once you have decided- decorating will become much easier.

In My Case: Every time I browsed home photos I was drawn to whites, khakis, and black. But everything I owned was flooded with reds and yellow accents. By removing those colors in throw pillows and such- and replacing them with neutrals, I instantly loved my home more.

My home became 'new' again with neutrals: thrift store finds and painted furniture combined with a few pops of color

2. Venture Outside the Chain Stores: It seems easy to walk into a furniture store and buy ‘the room’. But homes that are the most appealing to the eye are layered. Not everything is matchy-matchy. So don’t be afraid to go to local antique stores, second hand stores, and boutiques. Some of the items you find may need a new coat of paint or a bit of reupholstery work, but that is what will make them unique. These items take a little more time to find, but they are worth it.

In My Case: I have turned in to a collector of old things. Not really fancy, expensive antiques, but items with great design and a bit of history. I have vowed not purchase any more quick fixes made with particle wood because the prices are low. Instead I spend a bit of time each month combing through stores like Goodwill. Recently I found a beautiful dresser with great lines at an antique store. It needed a bit of work and some paint. But it was real wood and it only cost $40. After a little TLC, that dresser has become one of my favorite pieces. It adds so much interest to my home.

 4. Use What You Have: It’s the whole idea of shopping your home. Look around at what you already have. Does the furniture you own have great shape, but is just in need of new paint or fabric? Try using pieces in unexpected ways. Move a dresser to the foyer or try a wingback chair in the kitchen. Moving around itmes that you have always had can be a great way to feel like you are getting something new.

In My Case: I had a white wooden tea table that had been used outside as plant stand. When I was looking for a side table in my dining room, I kept shopping but couldn’t find the ‘right’ thing. Then on a whim I moved the table inside. It was a perfect fit!

3. It’s a Marathon, not a Sprint: Decorating your home is a process and it is constantly evolving. It is impossible to do it all at once. If you rush it, you will end up with regret and items you don’t want. Take the time to make a plan, look at lots of pictures, and don’t go shopping without a ‘big picture’. You will never regret taking your time and making good decisions.

In My Case: I bought a red couch. Yes, a micro-fiber, red couch. At the time, the price was good and it seemed quirky/cool. I didn’t think about the fact that when I got tired of red, I would have a very large piece of furniture that was bright red. And now that I am on a mission to rid my house of this color, I still have this couch. It is  ‘hidden’ in my hubby’s office. But every time I look at it, I am reminded of that fact that you should never rush into big home decisions.

4. Final Thoughts: In general, go with neutrals for large, expensive items. Save bright and trendy colors/patterns for throw pillows and accessories- they are much easier and cheaper to change out year after year. Include lots of personal details in your home- photos and mementos will make your home more interesting and unique. And lastly, it’s a hobby- have fun with it. There is no right or wrong way to decorate your home. It needs be comfortable and enjoyable for you and your family. The most beautiful homes are those with happy people inside it!
