Crafty How-To: Cupcake Wreath

Last weekend when we hosted our first backyard party of the summer, everything was kept fairly simple. No elaborate table settings or linen table cloths, no center pieces or fancy decorations. Just good food and fun people.
But, simple doesn't have to mean plain. So this gathering did include one craft.

I had seen cupcake wreaths floating around Pinterest, but I could never find the 'exact' directions needed to put one together. Since I had made a coffee filter wreath before, I decided to approach this project in the same way. And the only thing better than making a new wreath, is making a new wreath with 60 of your closest friends :) especially when those friends are in your MOPS group.

Here are the supplies you need to make a Cupcake Wreath:
- 16 inch styrofoam wreath
- Approx. 250-300 cupcake wrappers (I chose 3 colors/patterns for our project)
- 250-300 straight pins

Depending on the color of your wreath (straw, white, green etc) you might want to wrap it before beginning. We used white crepe paper. This way if any of the wreath showed through, you wouldn't see the actual wreath.

Then we bunched, twisted, layered, or folded the cupcake wrappers and then used a straight pin to attach each wrapper to the wreath. There is no wrong way to do this. And you really have to experiment with it to see which way you like best. (To see a close up of the pins in the wrappers- click here to see how I made our Camping Party wreath.)

The more cupcake wrappers you use, the fuller the wreath. Total time for the project is about 2 hours. If you aren't interested in covering the entire wreath, you could create a cluster of 'cupcake' flowers on the side and then add a bow.

I will keep our wreath up most of the summer. Of course when it rains, I will bring it in. I love the texture, mixture of colors, and overall 'cheeriness' of the wreath. And this is a great project for any season or party theme.
The wreath was a cute way to welcome our guests to our backyard party. My MOPS group had just about as much fun making the wreath as my family did at our little gathering.
What crafts do you plan on making for your outdoor summer decor?
