HOW TO CELEBRATE WHEN YOU HAVE TO
SOCIAL DISTANCE
The world-wide coronavirus pandemic is frightening and unsettling. We have all been tasked with something that at first seemed impossible, but has now become our new routine. Stay at home. Stay at home. Stay at home. The coronavirus is a killjoy. But life has found a way to go on. The sun is rising and setting. The days on the calendar are ticking by. And in the midst of a global crisis, there are people and there are birthdays. So how do you celebrate a special occasion when you have to social distance? No hugs, no kisses, no parties. Are the only options for celebrating birthdays a text or phone call?
SAFE WAYS TO CELEBRATE DURING A PANDEMIC
My daughter just turned 14 years old and like many people, her party plans had to be changed due to the current health crisis. But we decided we would not let it dampen our spirits. Family and friends rallied together to make her day special and one that she will always remember. Since many of you are facing the same situation, I am sharing ideas for celebrating life...when life demands social distance.
Please adhere to your local restrictions regarding 'shelter in place' when planning any birthday or special occasion celebrations.
SIGNS AND YARD DECORATIONS FOR A
QUARANTINE BIRTHDAY
Since "the home" is the place to be right now, bring the party decorations there. You can practice safe social distance while adding birthday flair to the guest of honor's home.
-Decorate their trees with posters and balloons.
-Put signs on their windows.
-Chalk the sidewalk.
-Leave gifts (flowers, balloons are more!) on the porch.
-Support small businesses like "Sign Gypsies" and order a custom-made birthday sign.

PLAN A DRIVE-BY BIRTHDAY PARADE
Set a time for everyone to drive by and share birthday wishes (from the safety of their car!). Parade guests can make signs to hold up, sing happy birthday from the windows, and drop presents on the sidewalk as they pass. Shower the guest of honor with glitter confetti (you can purchase a glitter confetti cannon here!) or silly spray as you pass by.

GET OFF THE GRID
Does the idea of staying at home for your birthday really overwhelm you? Get outside- go for a family walk, bike ride or hike. Depending on where you live, pack up a tent and go camping for the night. A little time away from your house and some fresh air can help chase away the birthday blues.
LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT
You can view a quarantine birthday as a bummer or an opportunity. You at not stuck at home, you are safe at home. Be thankful! You will always remember the year when you celebrated your birthday 'at home'... and your family and friends found thoughtful, creative ways to make it special.
