Pay it Forward

For those of you who have a blog, you know the little community that exists between our computers. Far away friends who encourage you and act as a sounding board for ideas. The inspiration and creativity in 'the blog world' seems to be as deep as the ocean. Recently, I received an email from a fellow blogger. It included a heartfelt note about my blog. I was so touched. Sometimes I forget that people really read my words- this is not just my crafty diary.

The note also included a chance to share something personal facts about me, fun! Most importantly it included the opportunity to then 'pay it forward' and thank all those other bloggers who inspire me in my crafty journey.

So first of all, thank you to Sara over at Alderberry Hill- your email/award made my day!

Second, here are the requirements that come with the award :)
-Link back to the blogger who passed along the award.
-Share 7 things about yourself.
-Pass along the award to 15 other bloggers who inspire you.

So here are my random 'things'.

1. Pinterest always makes me hungry- all those yummy recipes. Maybe one day I'll actually cook one of them!

2. I think you can never have enough burlap. Seriously, is there anything that can't be done with it???

3. My favorite time of day is morning. There is so much potential at the start of a new day.

4. I love big chunky jewelry.

5. I am hoping to launch my etsy shop soon- and that makes me happy :) :)

6. Today, yellow is my new favorite color.

7. I love my kindle, but there is nothing like going to the bookstore and getting a new book. The pages smell so good!

The thing that I like most about blogs is that there is room for lots of everyone. It is not competitive, we help, encourage, and inspire each other. Each person brings something different to the table. So here are a few that have inspired me lately...

Pretty Party: Fall Bridal Shower

My youngest sister Becka is getting married in a few months. And in celebration of our dear Becka and her fiance Josh, we decided to honor her with a fall themed shower--"Apple of My Eye: He Picked Her, She Picked Him".

The idea for the theme came from Hostess with the Mostess.
This party was special not only because it was for Becka, but because of all the fun we had planning it. Thanks to Pinterest, my mom and sisters (yes even the bride!) were able to share their ideas with me. It was neat for all four of us to collaborate without even being in the same room, or even the same state for that matter!

Our inspiration for this party can be found at by clicking here.

Throwing a party as team is so much easier than doing it alone.  All the baking, crafting, and decorating was divided among Amanda, my mom, and myself.

The shower was held at my mom's beautiful house. We decorated the table by "shopping her home". The table was filled with homemade finger foods, rustic burlap, clean white linens, fresh apples, sparkly crystal, fine china, and speckled with a few bright orange pumpkins.

Don't you love 'toile pumpkin' my mom made? A bit of fabric and mod podge on a real pumpkin!
My mom created these Corn Husk Poms from a tutorial found on Centsational Girl.

This wreath is actually my door decor from Valentine's Day. But the natural colors and sweet message made it the perfect accent for the shower.

Amanda made these yummy, adorable apple cupcakes. They are chocolate cupcakes topped with mini-donuts that have been cut in half. The entire top was iced and then rolled in red sprinkles.

In keeping with the theme, I dipped crunchy apples in gooey caramel and then sprinkled chocolate chips over the top. The tags for the apples (which served as party favors) were custom made for free over at The Wedding Chicks.

The party was kept lively by these three girls. They will be part of the ceremony. Becka is actually having six flower girls total. Such a sweet aunt to include everyone on her big day!

Becka was given so many lovely gifts. Dishes, cook sets, utensils, stemware and more.

At the end of the shower, we had everyone place a red thumb print on this vintage tree printable I found here

I mounted the tree printable on a canvas covered in newspaper and mod modge. It made the cutest 'guest book' and since Becka loves to decorate in black and white, she can hang it in their new home. It will be a sweet reminder of the friends and family who gathered to celebrate with her.

We love you Becka- and wish happiness and blessings upon you and Josh!

Polkie Dot Pumpkin

My 'baby' is two. And you know what they say about two year olds....

Well that is almost, never true about my Maisy.

In fact she is funny, sweet, and a great little companion. She even helped me with this project.

After I covered this lopsided pumpkin with Mod Podge and tissue paper- she pointed to it and said "Polkie Dots".

Could there be a better name for this project? I think not.
And who doesn't like a "Polkie Dot" pumpkin? :)

Here
So if you aren't in the mood to carve your pumpkin this week, why not make it fancy with a few "Polkie Dots" of your own. And let the count down to candy begin!

Sharing at these great parties:

Crafting with Elmer's- GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

Oh happy day! I was recently contacted by Elmer's with a crafty request. Try out some of the newest products that Elmer's has created and blog about it. So when a box full of supplies showed up on my door step, I got excited.

When it comes to Elmer's- I have always thought of school glue. But it turns out they have an entire range of fun products- including foam boards and tacky glue. So everything from scrapbooking to home decor to holiday crafts can be created with their help.  And even better, the people at Elmer's have created a collection of 101 Projects for inspiration. You can find lots of their ideas on the Elmer's facebook page .

Afton had a day off from school recently, so she and I scrolled through the Elmer's Project Guide online.  I told her to pick any project and that we would work on it together while Maisy napped.  Of course the project that caught her eye was "Make a Haunted House".

Using her imagination and the Elmer's supplies, Afton built a house. I used the X-ACTO knife provided to cut the shapes. Then she used scissors and the Elmer's glue to decorate it.

With a few Halloween stickers and some glitter spray- the house was complete. It turned out so cute! I love that she got to create an original Halloween decoration for our home. And it totally beats one of those 'candy house kits' at the store! (Just imagine how sweet this could be done as a gingerbread house during Christmas!)

We had some of the foam board left, so yesterday while Afton was in school and Maisy was napping, I created some original art for my new renovated bathroom.  I used an image of a tree for inspiration and then used the X-ACTO knife and Elmer's foam board to cut it out. Then I covered a canvas in burlap and painted on a few chevron stripes. Finally I used the Elmer's craft glue to attach the tree to the burlap. The newly created artwork adds the perfect bit of color and texture to our guest bath.

And whenever I see the tree I think of a quote I heard this week at church, "be willing to plant a seed for a tree whose shade you will never sit under."

Thanks to Elmer's for the fun kit and the great project ideas. And now the best part is, Elmer's is giving away 2 kits to you- my crafty readers.

Each kit includes the following:
·         Foam Board
·         Foam Tri-Fold Display Board
·         Mini Bi-Fold Foam Board
·         CraftBond Extra Strength Glue Stick
·         X-ACTO Gripster Knife
·         CraftBond Tacky Glue

And if you win, you can use your kit to create anything from photo puzzles, coasters, giant postcards, games to holiday houses, wreaths, or anything you can dream up.

Halloween Crafts for Kids

Earlier this month, I spent some time creating fall decor for our house. You remember, the pumpkin topiaries, burlap wreaths and printable art.

But a few days ago, Afton said she was ready to make a few decorations of her own. We found this book at the library and immediately she compiled a list of 'crafts to make'.

Luckily, it was a gloomy Sunday- so we had plenty of time to get creative.
First up- the silly spiders. We had the pipe cleaner legs, googly eyes, and paint already. A quick trip to Hobby Lobby later, we had the foam balls too.

Next, she wanted to paint the pumpkin she picked out at the farm. Afton is all-about witches right now. So that was her 'inspiration'.  She used the party hat template from Maisy's party to make a hat and then stuck on letters from my scrapbook stash.

We decided that the dresser in the entry would be the perfect place to display her creations. So I cleared off the top and added a framed printable that I found here. Details about the Haunted House will be coming soon :)

We have also been reading a ton of Halloween books from our library. Afton and Maisy's favorite book so far are "The Hallowiener", "The Ugly Pumpkin", and "The Halloween Queen".
