Party Perfection: 5 Simple Steps

What ever happened to birthday parties at McDonalds? Remember the good old days when jumping in the ball pit and slice of cake was enough? Well those times are gone. And since I am firm believer of  “When in Rome…” I have made an effort to keep up with the trends and changes in entertaining.  Martha Stewart has set the bar high. And now a party isn’t ‘just a party’.

But luckily, that doesn’t mean parties can’t be fun, or easy, or affordable. Parties may look a bit more polished nowadays, but with a few easy tips, you will find that anyone can entertain with style.

STEP 1: CHOOSE A THEME
Having a theme for a party actually makes everything else painless. Your theme doesn’t have to be elaborate like “A Parisian Slumber Party”. It can be as simple as a color- “Pink” or a movie- “Up”. Birthday parties, showers, and even weddings are easy to put together once the big picture is chosen. So take a moment to choose a theme you like and that fits the occasion. Need help deciding? Browse through sites like Hostess with theMostess, Pizzazzeri, or Kara’s Party Ideas

STEP 2: THE INVITE SETS THE TONE
I know and love Evite; it is my ‘go-to’ site for pool parties in the summer. But when planning a real party, you need a real invitation. Paper in an envelope with a stamp. It is old fashioned and a bit more time consuming, but it is the first glimpse your guests will have of your party. Now the price range for invitations can vary greatly. (Anyone remember the Bridal Shower invite from  “Bridesmaids” with the live butterflies?!) But there are so many cute, affordable options. Try making them yourself; you could craft a post card, a movie ticket, or even a puzzle to mail to your guests. Or shop Etsy and type in your party theme. You will be amazed at the number of adorable invites you can purchase and print from home. An invite doesn’t need to be elaborate to be appreciated!

 STEP 3: THE DÉCOR
This is my favorite part of the planning. With your party theme in mind, it is time to bring your event to life. Party décor has moved from crepe paper and balloons to tissue paper poms and bunting. The best ideas for party décor are homemade. And if you aren’t a crafty-type, have no fear, Martha Stewarts’s party products or sites like Etsy can actually provide you with a ‘hand-crafted’ look right out of the box.  Other must haves for party décor: fresh flowers, a wreath or sign on the front door that coordinates with the theme, and paper goods that tie in with the theme. And not everything you decorate with has to be bought. Try shopping your home – you might be surprised that those old glass vases become chic when filled with colorful candy or flowers. Candles, platters, baskets, and unique containers can easily be incorporated into most themes.

STEP 4: FABULOUS FOOD
I will admit, I am not crazy about cooking. I like to bake, but real food isn’t as interesting to me. But no matter what time of day you are hosting your event; you need to feed your guests! If you like to cook, try to recipes that tie in with the party theme. If you are like me, swing by Central Market and grab some gourmet to go! The dessert really does need to ‘take the cake”. Whatever you choose- cupcakes, cake pops, donuts, petit fours, whoopee pies, or even brownies, make them special and unique to your theme. As an added bonus- your dessert can be part of the décor.  Use the dessert as the centerpiece on your party table!

STEP 5: REMEMBER ‘WHO” THE PARTY IS FOR
I really enjoy putting a party together, but at the end of the day, if the party is for my Kindergartener, then it needs to be about her. The food, the décor, the games… if she doesn’t enjoy them, then none of the effort is worth it. So find a way to keep the balance. ‘Real’ parties can be styled beautifully. ‘Real’ parties can be full of thoughtful themed details. And the best thing about ‘real’ parties is that both the hostess and the guests can have fun.

Crafty How-To: DIY Canvas Wrapped Photos

Hope you all had a great weekend celebrating Dad. We had a little cook-out and swim party for the special guys in our life.

We also presented Daddy, Grandpa, and GranDanny with their special photo gifts. They were a hit!

When I originally shared the project with you, I had just planned to print and frame the photos. But on Friday, I saw some great deals on canvases, and I decided to try something new.

If you want to make your own canvas wrapped photo, here is what you will need:
-Mod Podge (matte or glossy)
-Paint brushes
-Paint
-Canvas
-Scissors
-Photo

First, I used the print lab at Costco to print the photo in two sizes, 8x8 and 12x12. I like to use Costco or Mpix for printing because you can choose 'turn off color correction'. This is important because when you edit photos using PicMonkey or Photoshop, you usually end up adjusting color. Most photo labs automatically 'correct the color'. So double-check that you have turned off 'color correction' before you print.

I found canvases in various sizes at Michael's and then got to work. To begin, paint the sides of your canvas and then let them dry. At first, I planned to paint the sides in turquoise, but then I decided black looked better.

Next, trim your photo if needed, so that it is a perfect fit. Then use a paint brush to cover the front of the canvas with Mod Podge. Place the photo on and smooth down with a clean towel. Let it dry for about 20 minutes.

Finally, paint the entire canvas with Mod Podge. I did the front and sides. The Mod Podge will go on white, but it will dry clear.

And voila, for about $7 you have a beautiful canvas wrapped photo! The large size looks great on a wall and the smaller size would be cute on a table top or bookshelf.

Next time I do this project, I might do a thicker canvas. I would love to do a family photo on a big canvas for the dining room.
 How was your Father's Day?

Promoting your Page on FB

If you use facebook occasionally, then you will find this pretty interesting. As we all know, facebook is 'free'. You can connect with friends, share photos and ideas, and hang out there without paying any fees. For the most part, any ads that appear on the site are small and limited to the right side of the page. In fact, until I really looked for them, I didn't even notice that facebook had advertising.

Beyond my personal facebook page, I have two business pages. One for "Samantha Conner Designs" and one for "Crafty Texas Girls". I like to post regularly to my Crafty Texas Girls facebook page because it is a great way to communicate with readers and share ideas that I don't neccessarily want to use for posts here. I also like it because I can share links from this blog when new posts are published.

I am not crazy about recruiting 'likes' for my pages.  But I do make an effort to encourage readers to follow my blog either through facebook, an email subscription or programs like GFC. These avenues help readers stay in touch and read my blog regularly.

source

Recently on facebook, as I was posting a new link,  I noticed that I could actually see how many fans were really given a chance to view my facebook posts. And out of 700 facebook followers, on average, only about 19% of them were ever seeing my posts in their news feeds. I wondered why? Hmmmm.....

I looked a little deeper and it turns out that facebook chooses the content you see in your news feed. The more you interact with a person or page, either through comments or likes, the more that type of 'story' will appear in your news feed.

So basically if you follow a page, but are the 'silent type' :) -- then you will no longer see that page's updates in your news feed. Because facebook has decided what it wants you to read.

Then I noticed on each of my page posts, a little box that said 'promote'. Facebook has been so kind to offer me the opportunity to pay for my readers, my fans to see my posts! What??!! I thought this site was free! The more I pay, the more people that my posts will actually reach.

If I choose not to pay, then readers who enjoy my posts, but don't feel the need to comment on everything they read, will not be able to see my content in their news feed.

That doesn't sit well with me. Yes I know facebook is 'free'. But remember this, facebook only exists because we (you and me) provide the content. We are the writers of facebook. Without us posting photos of our family vacations, updating our status, and re-posting links for articles we want to share, facebook would cease to exist. We are facebook. They NEED us to log on, they want us on their site as much as possible, for as long as possible. Can you imagine what would happen if everyone boycotted facebook for an entire day??

source
So since it is people like us that make facebook a popular site, and we have taken the time to create and 'like' pages we want to see---why is it so hard for us to read what we want? Why are we unable to reach the people who have taken the time to click that 'like' button on our page?

The answer is Money. It may be 'free' but facebook needs to generate money. So they will charge for ads and then they will turn our posts into ads and charge for those too. Which basically means, your news feed will just become one big advertisement. And that news feed/advertisement will be full of big companies and big blogs who could afford to pay for you to read their content. And then what will happen to everyone else?? The small business, the little blog, those with ideas and insight you enjoy?

I am not sure the future of facebook. I will continue to use the site because there are parts of it I really enjoy. I like having all my favorite blogs in one place. I like seeing my friends and their kids. I like hearing about what my out-of-state family is up to. But you can be assured, I will not be paying for anyone to see my posts.

Manually add a page to your news feed.

SO here is what I am going to do instead:
1. Let my readers know that to see me on facebook, they need to interact. :)

2. Ask readers to manually add my page to their news feed.
(See the above graphic-- go to your favorite page, hover your cursor over the "like" button until a drop down menu appears. Then click "add to news feed".)

3. Encourage readers to follow along using other mediums. The easiest being an email subscription. (You can do this by entering your email address here.)
Other examples are to follow along via pinterest, twitter etc.

4. Promote my content by using other sites-- such as pinterest, twitter, linky parties etc.
(HootSuite is a good site for managing these.)

5.  Remind readers they can create a facebook 'list' made up of pages they have liked. This list can be specifically for blogs/businesses/pages they enjoy following. Sometimes putting all your pages in one place will make them easier to locate and follow.
(Although it still won't show up higher in news feed without interaction or by manually adding the page to their news feed-- see #2)

**And in the end, remember-- do not worry. Good content will lead to loyal readers who share what they find helpful, creative, interesting, and fun!

Bigger than the boogie man

It's Vacation Bible School week at our church. This year I volunteered to be a Guide-- so I have been doing my best to lead 18 "future first graders" through games, crafts, singing, stories and more. It is amazing how many fun activities you can fit into a mere 3 hours! I think that Veggie Tales song "God is Bigger than the boogie man" will forever be stuck in my head :)

Being with these little ones has warmed my heart (and left me exhausted!!). But they have reminded me of some simple joys...
Kids sing loud and dance silly. They are eager to hold hands, pass out hugs, and share a smile. They say what is on their minds and express what they feel in their hearts. They try so hard to 'be big'-- but only if that means they can still jump in a bounce house. They all want to be 'the helper' and a 'good friend'. They notice everything and imitate what they observe. The patience, kindness and love these children have been shown by others, is reflected through their actions.

Time spent with children is truly a humbling experience.

What are you up to this week?

Welcome friends!! Summer is in full swing around our house. We have been busy playing, crafting, and making some fun gifts for Father's Day.
