8 Fun Things to do with Kids on New Year's Eve

With New Year's Eve just around the corner, it's time to start making plans. Most people with kiddos will ring in the New Year with their kiddos. Which, if you plan a few activities ahead of time, is actually the best! If you will be spending the last night of 2016 with littles, keep reading to see my favorite family activities for NYE.

1. The more the merrier. Consider getting together with a few other couples. No need for a big bash. Instead invite over a small group of close family friends. The kids will keep each other entertained and the moms/dads will get to enjoy some adult conversation.

2. Dress Code. A themed dress code makes everything better. It's fun to have a reason to dress-up. And the dress-up doesn't have to be elaborate. Invite everyone in your family to wear pjs, favorite sports team t-shirt, funniest outfit, or even cocktail attire. Dressing up for a theme makes staying at home feel more special.

3. Set up a craft. Let the kiddos design/decorate their own fancy NYE hats. You can buy simple 'birthday cones' and jazz them up with foam stickers. Or get creative and fashion unique hats from pipe cleaners and newspaper.

4. Decorate.
Hang some crepe paper or sparkly tinsels. Blow up balloons. Set out items for a photo booth. Add a glittered disco ball. You could even print photos to show the 'best moments' your family had in 2016.

5. Plan a few games.
Our personal favorites are LCR, UNO, Jenga, Pictionary, Charades, Karaoke, Just Dance, and Wii Sports. My girls also like when we dim the lights and have a dance party with silly moves and flashlights or glow sticks.

6. Time to Eat. Turn the meal into an activity. Homemade pizzas are a great way to get the kids involved in cooking. Homemade nachos, calzones or a baked potato bar are fun too. Anything that let's the kids 'build their own' is a hit in my house.

7. Make a resolution.
Every year we print these 'Year in Review' sheets for our girls to fill out. Then we put them in a sealed envelope and save them until the following NYE. It's kind of like a time capsule. So this year, we will be read our Review from last year before we fill out the one for this year. It's fun to see how much we have all grown and changed in just one year.

8. Stay up late.
Whether you can make it to midnight or not. Stay up later than usual. And do a countdown for 2017. Make sure everyone hugs and gives a kiss to celebrate the beginning of a new year, a blank slate, and new opportunities. Life is a series of tiny little miracles. Notice them.
