Welcome to Day 5 of "Christmas in July"
hosted by Cowgirl Up!

Sharpie Plates
I am Samantha from Crafty Texas Girls. I am so excited to share my fun and easy "Sharpie Plates" with you today!

Like any good crafter, I love finding 'vintage treasures'. And on a recent thrifting trip at our local Goodwill, I came across these pretty white plates. So for $6, I snatched up 4 coffee cups and 4 plates.

How to Make Your Own Sharpie Plates
Inspired by a project I found via Pinterest, I decided to use my 'new' plates and a Sharpie marker to create some Christmas dishes.
One of my favorite color combinations is black and white, so I loved the contrast and simplicity of this project. I used a piece of tape to make a 'guide line'-- it helped me keep the letters straight. Then I free-handed some polka dots on the edge of the plate and on the mug. If you make a mistake, don't worry! Just use some fingernail polish remover to wipe away the ink.

Finally, I baked the dishes in the oven for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Then let them cool, they will be hot!
How to Use Your Sharpie Plate
When the holidays roll around, these plates can be used so many different ways!
-For serving Christmas breakfast
-On display in a Christmas vignette
-Or even filled with Christmas goodies and given as presents to the neighbors.
Be Creative
I loved making this funky mug. The doodle was inspired by this plate.

And my favorite dish ended up being this one, my daughter made it!

Is it December Yet?
I can't wait for December to roll around so I can incorporate these plates into my Christmas decor.

What would you make with a sharpie marker and some white dishes? What Christmas crafts are you excited to try this year? Stay tuned, "Christmas in July" continues tomorrow with my friend Missy from "Lookie What I Did"!

***UPDATE: A few of you have asked about wash and care for the Sharpie Plates.  Since it is a 'hand decorated' plate, I am going to hand wash them. If giving them as a gift, you may want to write 'hand wash only' on the back before you bake it. From what I have read, they are food-safe. But if you are worried, use them only for decorative purposes.

For Best Results:Use on porous dishes with a regular sharpie. If your dishes are heavily glazed, use an OIL BASED Sharpie.

Trouble-Shooting: if your Sharpie ink does not set and washes off, try 'cooking' your project at 400 degrees-- since ovens vary, try a higher setting if you feel the ink is not setting properly at 350.

  5. I did this on some cheap IKEA plates last Christmas and loved it. But I never knew you could bake them to seal it. Great idea! I'll have to do that when I dig them out next Christmas.

  11. Just made my first Sharpie mug, and I'm too excited to start using it!
I was wondering, has anyone had issues with washing? Are you all hand-washers or machine-washers? I'm not altogether opposed to remaking my doodles now and then, but I'm just curious!
    Thanks Samantha!

  12. If you can't find or don't want to use Sharpie markers- ask your local craft/hobby store. There are several types of ceramic paints that would work too!

  13. i tried this with some mugs the other night and found that when i baked them at 350 for 30 minutes the marker would wash right off. i decided to try it again but this time turned the temp up to 400 baking them for the same 30 minutes. i have yet to have the marker wash off of them.

  14. I tried this with plates that the kids decorated. I did 350 for 20 minutes, let them cool overnight, then hand washed and the marker came off when I used the scourer side of the sponge (something had gotten on one and needed to be scrubbed off). I was so bummed. Decided to just hang the other three and have that child make a new one. Will try again with higher temp, longer time and will not use the scouer side of the sponge :)

  15. I would like to do this project with my preschool class, I will be writing a poem on the plate and putting their hand prints in the middle. I was wondering if using ink on their hands will work? If not what can I use that would be safe and easy for their hand prints? Thank you so much.

  16. I've found that oil based sharpies become dishwasher safe after baking them. Otherwise, regular sharpies wash off either right away or after a few scrubbings. Not a great idea to put oil based products on kids hands, and if you find a product that kids can use, won't come off the dinnerware, and you can eat or drink from it, let me know!

  17. Hi Brooke
I am not really sure! But if I were you, I would just google 'food safe paints' and see what you can find. The comment above also has some good info and might be a great starting place. I think it also is important to decide whether the plates will be decorative or for actual eating. You could also research 'painting on ceramic plates' for some more information about getting their handprints on the plates.

Thanks for reading and good luck with your project! :) Samantha
