Tips for Broken Bow, Oklahoma

Are you up for another travel post? I haven't been sharing many 'craft posts' this summer. It seems like traveling and playing with my kids has taken over my craft time ;) But I promise this post will bring you both a craft and some travel tips for Broken Bow, Oklahoma. So let's get to it!

We have talked forever about taking a family trip with our friends -- and we finally got it on the books. We wanted a little weekend away, something out-doorsy, and a chance to be active. We also wanted it to feel like 'glamping' -- not camping! Ha! We decided on a trip to Broken Bow, Oklahoma. It is only about a 3 hour drive from the DFW area. And it is amazing how much the landscape changes from the metroplex to the wooded area of Broken Bow.

As promsied-- here is the crafty portion of this post. I really wanted 'trip shirts' for the girls. So I finally worked up the nerve to buy vinyl and make my own tanks with my Cricut Explore Air. And surprisingly it was so easy! There are lots of tutorials on the Cricut Design Space to help you get started. I created the "Lake Hair Don't Care" shirts for the girls. Then did "Happy Campers" shirts for Kim and myself. They all turned out so cute and of course I learned a lot. (Now I am adding a heat press to my Christmas wish list!) I can't wait to make more shirts soon!

We checked into our cabin around 5pm on Friday. We rented it from Airbnb- the cabin was called "Borrowed Time". It was brand-new. It had a pretty kitchen, two bedrooms (each with queen sized beds) and two bathrooms downstairs, and a loft with 4 single beds upstairs. Each bedroom and the loft had a tv, and so did the family room. There was a pool table in the loft and a hot tub on the back porch. The area outside of the cabin was shaded with lots of tall trees and had a fire pit with chairs and a picinic table.

(Pro Tip- bring flashlights for exploring at night. It is so dark out in the woods, my kids couldn't believe all the stars that we usually can't see in the city!)

After we checked in, we hung out and let the girls explore. With Jeff's help, they shot a bb gun and a bow. Then they hopped into the hot tub. They were wasting no time!

For dinner that night, we went to Grateful Head Pizza. It was pretty busy, but we listened to live music while we waited for our table. By the the food arrived, we were all famished.

(Pro Tip- you can make reservations at Grateful Head, but not on the 'day of'. So call the day before and book a table for your group. That restaurant is popular, so be prepared to wait if you don't have a reservation.)

The next morning, Jeff and I got up early and found the cutest coffee shop. Okie Girls Coffee and Ice Cream. Then we all went hiking on the Lakeview Lodge Trail. It took us about 2 hours. I think our little detours along the way (aka getting off the trail!) set us back a bit. We were all tired and hot when we finally reached the end.

We had made reservations online at the Beavers Bend Marina. We got a 15 passenger pontoon boat with a tube for 4 hours. The girls loved tubing. We had a hard time getting them to take a break so we could just swim and relax.

(Pro Tip-  If you plan to rent a boat while you are there, be sure to do this online several days prior to your visit. Also bring lots of drinks/snacks with you. There aren't any restaurants or places to grab a bite to eat on the water.)

That evening we went to dinner at Moon Tower Bar & Grill. They had live music and really fresh food. The girls danced and danced.

(Pro Tip- We were exhausted from being on the water all day and would have liked to cook-out at the cabin. But the closest grocery store was about 20 minutes away. So, go grocery shopping prior to checking in. Because once you are in town, there aren't any food shopping options.)

After dinner, we made smore's (for the second night!) and did some star-gazing. Everyone was super sleepy by the time we made it to bed.

(Pro Tip- Bring lots of bug spray and smores supplies! These kids each ate about 6 smores over the course of two nights!)

On Sunday, we got up early again and picked up coffee at Abendingo's. Then we loaded up and went straight to the lake for paddle boarding. Jeff recently bought these iRocker inflatable paddle boards. They are amazing because they are made of heavy duty PVC plastic. They fit inside a backpack and inflate in about 5 minutes. So they are perfect for hiking into a great spot, inflating and getting on the water. We were on the paddle boards for about 2 hours.

(Pro Tip- Since the lake has a rocky bottom, the water is pretty clear! Bring goggles so you can see the fish and other cool sights under the water.)

And then we had to come home. All good things must come to an end. But this quick weekend away at Broken Bow was awesome. We can't wait to go back when the weather gets cooler. There is so much we didn't have time to do- like fishing,  horseback ridingkayaking down the river, visiting the Hochatown Petting Zoo, and trying out Girls Gone Wine

Glamping with friends is the way to go!
