Planning the Perfect Retreat

This weekend is the "Make Lemonade" Mother-Daughter Retreat at our church. Everything is coming together and on Friday evening at 6pm, the fun will begin. I am so proud of all the women who have poured their hearts into this weekend. It is amazing how light a load becomes when many hands are lifting.

The event is full of inspiring speakers, good food (catered by Celebrity) and built-in-bonding time with fun activities in between. I have 5 crafts planned for the weekend. Supplies are ready and samples/directions are done. Activity stations will be set up throughout the retreat for the Moms/Daughters. Here is a peek at what we will be making at the craft stations. A special thanks to my Afton who helped me with all of this. I wanted to do the samples with my 8 year old to make sure they were something that a 'real girl' and her mom would enjoy doing together. We photographed the steps to complete the crafts and made a simple "How-To" picture instructions for each station. All these crafts passed inspection and have Afton's approval :) Perfect!

We will have a photo booth at the event, so this little frame will be perfect for displaying the "Mother-Daughter" pics on the fridge after the weekend is over.

Yesterday, we went up to church to film a short Q&A video that will run during the event. Afton is my performer- loves to be on stage or showing off :) So she was excited about being in the video. But as we sat down in the little sound room, under the bright lights with 3 film guys watching-- she got nervous. They took turns asking questions to us both like "What do you like to do with your mom/daughter for fun?" "What's something silly you do with your mom/daughter?" (Afton's answers were mostly about making crafts together- go figure!) But as the interview continued and the lights shone down on us, my little perfectionist melted in a puddle of tears as they asked "What is the most special thing about your mom?"...

She recovered with a hug and some tissues. And after a few more questions we wrapped up and she left with a smile. I took the girls to lunch afterwards. I asked her why she cried during the video, she said "I just wish I could have known the questions before so I could have prepared. I didn't know the right thing to say."

And that kind of broke my heart because I know that feeling all too well. Wanting to say and do the right thing, wanting to have the perfect answer. It is a hard way to travel through life, wanting to do everything 'the right way'. Because no matter how hard you try, that level of 'perfect' is just always out of reach. Try as we might it is not attainable.

So my goal for this weekend retreat is not to have the perfect "Mother/Daughter" crafts. My goal is not for the event to go perfectly. My goal is have fun with my daughter, love on her, and laugh with her. My goal is to leave ideas of perfect at home, and just enjoy being together.

Completed! Our Bathroom Remodel is Done

For those of you that have been following me this summer, you have read a lot about our bathroom remodel. And...it's all done! So here are a million photos of our 'new' master bathroom and bedroom. At the bottom of the post I have listed sources as well as links to the posts where I show 'the before' pics :) I hope you find some inspiration in what we have done.

Now let's start the tour! First up, the bedroom. I spruced up the bedding with a new quilt and an assortment of textured pillows. We also hung a series of mirrors above the headboard.

Now let's walk into the bathroom through our 'old' sliding door (here).

And welcome to the new bathroom! We replaced the tub, the shower, all the tile, and the shower glass. We also put in a new chandelier and bathroom fixtures. The walls were painted as well.

We added granite to the countertops, had the vanities painted black, and added drawer pulls too.

The tile runs all the way into our closet.

Which made it 'neccessary' for a chandelier to be hung in the closet:) And for my turquoise tufted bench {here} to move in here as well. Makes it feel more like a dressing room.

Now that's it all said and done, let me say, it's much more fun to clean a pretty room. I appreciate your sweet comments on Instagram, Facebook and here during the remodel. I feel like we have been through quite a journey together, don't you?! :)

Family Trip to Colorado

Right after the 4th of July we headed to Colorado for our version of the 'great American road trip'. We usually take the girls to the beach, but this summer we wanted to show them the mountains. Being from North Texas, they didn't have much experience with elevation :) I have to say, I did several things on this trip that scared me. I mean scared me so bad, my adrenaline was pumping! I can't remember the last time I have had that feeling. True, exciting fear. I think that's what happens as you grow up... things get scary! (Here are a handful of photos from our trip!)

We drove straight from our home near Dallas to Colorado Springs. We stayed at the Embassy Suites and had a whole list of things to do while we there.

We hiked along the Arkansas River and then went white water rafting. (This was one of the 'true fear' events!!)

We explored the Garden of the Gods and climbed rocks.

We even took a tour of the Cave of the Winds. (True fear again-- I am horribly claustrophobic and had to mentally force myself deep under ground. It was a mental feat!)

One of the most amazing things was our journey to the top of Pike's Peak via the cog train. I felt like we were on top of the world.

Next we drove to Breckenridge. Breck is so different from Colorado Springs. The mountains, the trees, the temperature. The town here was so appealing! I got up and ran one morning- it was beautiful and it felt so good to be cold! But the air is thin- I could feel the elevation difference in my lungs.

We took the gondola up the mountain to the Fun Park. We bought all day passes and literally stayed the whole time. There was the Alpine Slide (scared me!), a roller coaster, a maze, putt putt, rock climbing (scared again!), rock mining, a bounce house, and a trampoline.

The next day we got up and rented bikes. Afton did awesome on the mountain bike, we recently bought her one like this at home. But the hills got tough! Maisy rode on the 'tag along'- so much better than the baby seat she has been stuck in at home.

We ate a lot of good food and made a ton of priceless memories. I recommend this trip 100% to anyone who is looking for a physically active family vacation. I think there is something to be said for doing things that make you scared once in a while :)

Where we Stayed:
In Colorado Springs, we stayed at the Embassy Suites
In Breckenridge, we stayed at the Villages of Breckenridge.

Things to Do:
Rafting trip was through 'Raft Masters' in Canon City.
Alpine Slide and the Fun Park are in Breck.
Cave of the Winds for the cavern tour.
Cog Train to Pike's Peak
Arkansas River hike

Some Places to Eat:

Rudy's near Garden of the Gods
Mr. Ed's Family Restaurant in Canon City
Sunbird Restaurant in Colorado Springs
Butterhorn Bakery & Cafe in Frisco
Mary's Mountain Cookies in Breckenridge
Michael's Italian in Breckenridge
